Drunken Monkey is a neighbourhood coffee house in the Milk District of Orlando, Florida, a short drive east of downtown. The shop describes itself as Orlando's local coffee shop, and the building is hard to miss: a small purple house on North Bumby Avenue that has become one of the district's landmarks.
The coffee is roasted in house. Alongside it the kitchen bakes its own goods and cooks a menu that deliberately covers vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes rather than treating the first two as an afterthought, which is unusual enough in central Florida to be worth saying. Local artists hang work on the walls, and the art changes.
Opening hours are long and simple: Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. That covers breakfast, a working morning, lunch and an early dinner, and there is seating outdoors.
The Milk District takes its name from the dairy at its centre and sits between downtown Orlando and the Audubon Park area. It is a walkable pocket of small independent businesses rather than a strip of chains, which makes it a reasonable base for a morning if you are staying in the east of the city.
Orders can be placed ahead through the shop's own site if you would rather collect than wait, and the telephone is answered during opening hours.
