This is the restaurant of the Associação Agrícola de São Miguel — the island's farmers' association — at Campo do Santana. That ownership is the whole point of the place: the kitchen belongs to the people who raise the animals, and the house states plainly that its dishes are made with Azorean products.
São Miguel is cattle country. The island is green the year round, the herds stand out in the open in every month, and Azorean beef and cheese are what the archipelago sends to the mainland. A restaurant run by the farmers' association is as close to the source as eating here gets, and it takes part in the regional programme that supports restaurants buying local produce.
Some unusually practical detail is published: there are high chairs for babies and stain remover on hand, the technical sheets for every dish on the menu can be consulted on request — which for anyone with an allergy is worth more than a reassurance — and prices include VAT.
It opens every day from midday to ten at night, straight through, with no closing day. Tables are booked through the restaurant's own site.
Campo do Santana lies inland above the south coast, a few minutes from Ribeira Chã.
