Do-Do Café stands on the Šetalište Pet Danica in Herceg Novi. That address is the whole point of the place, so it is worth explaining: the Šetalište Pet Danica is the seafront promenade, a paved walk that runs for several kilometres along the water at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, with the sea on one side and the town climbing the hill on the other. Almost everything in Herceg Novi that faces the water faces it from here. The hours describe a café rather than a restaurant, and a long day: seven in the morning until one the following night, every day of the week without exception. Eighteen hours is the working pattern of a promenade café on this coast — the first coffee before work, the afternoon in the shade, and the evening walk that half the town takes when the heat goes. We hold no website for it, so nothing is written here about what it serves. The telephone is the way to ask. Herceg Novi sits at the entrance to the Boka Kotorska, about half an hour by car from Morinj along the E65 and rather less from the Croatian border. It is the sunniest town on the Montenegrin coast and the one with the most stairs: the old quarter climbs steeply from the water, so the promenade is where people actually walk, and a café on it is on the route rather than off it. You will find Do-Do Café at Šetalište Pet Danica 36, 85340 Herceg Novi.

Peters Pie & Coffee sits at number 18 on the Šetalište Pet Danica, the seafront promenade in Herceg Novi, eighteen doors along from the sea end and a short walk from the old town steps. The name says what it sells: pies and coffee. A pie shop is an unusual thing on this coast. Montenegrin baking runs to burek and to the sweet pastries of the Ottoman tradition, and the filled savoury pie is a northern European habit — so this is a house doing something the promenade does not otherwise offer, which is generally why a place like it survives among cafés that all serve the same three things. It opens at eight in the morning and closes at nine at night, every day of the week with no closing day. Those are daytime hours by the standards of the promenade, where the cafés either side run past midnight, and they say this is a bakery-café rather than a bar: breakfast, a coffee in the afternoon, something taken away for the walk. Herceg Novi lies at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, half an hour along the E65 from Morinj, and the promenade is the flattest way to see the town — the rest of it is stairs. You will find Peters Pie & Coffee at Šetalište Pet Danica 18, 85340 Herceg Novi.

Ćatovića Mlini is a konoba in Morinj, at the head of the Risan bay in the Boka Kotorska. The name means Ćatović's mills, and it is literal: the restaurant occupies old watermills, on the streams that come down off the Orjen massif and run into the bay a few metres further on. The water is the reason the mills were built here and the reason the place looks the way it does. It calls itself a konoba — the traditional Adriatic eating house rather than a restaurant in the international sense — and the greeting on its own site is direct: with us, you are the star. Tables stand outside among the water and the trees, which is where almost everyone sits. The hours are simple and the same every day of the week: midday to half past ten at night, straight through, with no closing day. Booking is the sensible course in season — this is one of the best-known addresses on the bay and the Boka fills up between June and September. Morinj lies on the E65, the coast road that runs around the bay from Herceg Novi towards Kotor. The Bay of Kotor is a UNESCO World Heritage site, and this stretch, the inner Risan basin, is the quietest part of it. You will find Ćatovića Mlini on the E65 at 85338 Morinj.

Verige 65 stands on the water at Kostanjica, on the coast road through the Bay of Kotor. The name is the address: Verige is the strait, the narrowest point of the whole bay, where the two sides come within a few hundred metres of one another. The word means chains, after the chain that was once drawn across the water to keep ships out. The restaurant sits on that narrows and describes itself as a place of unique energy. It is arranged for more than dinner. Alongside the kitchen the house takes events and weddings, which in this setting is the obvious use for a terrace over the water, and it keeps a gallery of its own on the site. The hours are long and identical every day: eight in the morning until midnight, with no break and no closing day. That covers a coffee on the way round the bay, a lunch, and a dinner as the light goes off the far shore. Kostanjica is between Morinj and Perast on the E65, about fifteen minutes' drive from either. The Verige strait is the point every boat entering the bay must pass, and the reason the inner Boka was defensible for six hundred years. Perast, with its two island churches out in the water, is the next village along and the most photographed spot on the whole bay — so this is a reasonable place to stop on the way there or back. You will find Verige 65 on the E65 at number 19, 85330 Kostanjica.

Bonazza is a restaurant on the Donji put in Dobrota, the long waterfront settlement that runs north from Kotor along the shore of the bay. The house keeps no website of its own beyond a Facebook page, so what is set down here is what that page states: the address, the telephone number, seating outdoors, and a middle price band. Dobrota is worth understanding before you go looking for it. It is not a village with a centre but a single street some seven kilometres long, following the water, lined with the stone houses that Kotor's sea captains built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. House numbers run high — this one is 170 — and addresses are found by the number rather than by any landmark. The kitchen is open from eight in the morning until midnight, every day of the week, with no closing day. That span is common along this coast and is what makes a waterfront restaurant usable as a breakfast stop as well as an evening one. The old town of Kotor, walled and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a few minutes to the south, and the bay road continues north towards Perast and the Verige strait. Parking along the Donji put is on the road itself and fills up through the summer, so an early table or a late one is easier to come by than one at eight in the evening. You will find Bonazza at Donji put 170, Dobrota, 85330 Kotor.

Spago is a bar and restaurant on Radoja Dakića in Podgorica, and it comes from the same house as Zheng-he, the Chinese restaurant in the city — both founded, as the owners put it, out of a love of hospitality, food and tradition. Knowing that the two are related explains the standard of service the place is run to. The house makes two claims for itself and both are checkable when you arrive. The first is the site: an exclusive and unusually quiet location, which in a capital city is worth something and is not the same as being central. The second is the wine. Spago keeps a wide Italian list and says so as its main argument — every great wine has a story behind it, and they expect one of them to be waiting for you. It opens at eight in the morning and runs to midnight, every day of the week without a closing day. That span makes it a coffee stop, a lunch and a late dinner at the same address, which is how a bar and restaurant together are meant to work. Radoja Dakića lies west of the Morača in the newer part of Podgorica, a short drive or a long walk from the old quarter. You will find Spago at Radoja Dakića 35, 81000 Podgorica.

Masala Art is an Indian restaurant in the middle of Podgorica, and it is one of the few places in Montenegro where the cooking of the subcontinent is treated as a serious kitchen rather than as a takeaway. The house calls itself upscale and describes what it does as an authentic journey through Indian cuisine — the familiar dishes, presented with some ceremony. That matters more here than it would elsewhere. Montenegrin restaurants run on grilled meat, Adriatic fish and the Italian influence that arrived across the water; an Indian kitchen in Podgorica is a genuine alternative rather than one option among many, and for a vegetarian traveller it is one of the easier addresses in the country. Food is delivered and can be collected, and tables are booked through the restaurant's own site. Two telephone numbers are given and both are answered. It opens every day from half past ten in the morning until half past ten at night, with no break and no closing day — so lunch at three and dinner at ten are equally possible. The restaurant sits west of the Morača in the newer part of the city, within reach on foot of the centre and a short drive from the old quarter. You will find Masala Art at Vasa Raičkovića 13a, 81000 Podgorica.

Babi Gourmet & Wine sits inside Capital Plaza on Šeika Zaida, the business complex in the newer half of Podgorica. It is one of the more recent openings in the city and seats about ninety, which makes it a large room by local standards and a practical one for a group. The kitchen is deliberately international rather than Montenegrin, and the range is wider than most: tacos and tortillas alongside sandwiches, meat and fish specialities and salads, with vegetarian dishes treated as part of the menu rather than an afterthought. In a country whose restaurants lean heavily on grilled meat and Adriatic fish, that breadth is the reason to know about the place. The house describes what it is aiming at as a calm, pleasant and comfortable room, and the location follows from that — a business address rather than a tourist one, quieter in the evening than the streets around the old quarter. Tables can be reserved, and the kitchen delivers. It is open every day from eight in the morning until midnight, straight through. Capital Plaza is in the Preko Morače district, west of the river, and it is signposted — the tower is one of the taller buildings in the city, which makes it easy to steer towards on foot. Šeika Zaida is named after Sheikh Zayed of Abu Dhabi, whose foundation helped fund this part of the city, and it runs parallel to the main road out towards the airport. You will find Babi at Šeika Zaida, Capital Plaza, 81120 Podgorica.

Trg Vojvode Becira Osmanagica 1, 81000 Podgorica

Pod Volat stands on Trg Vojvode Bećira Osmanagića in Stara Varoš, the old quarter of Podgorica. The name means under the arch, and it describes where the place is: this is the Ottoman-era part of the Montenegrin capital, the few streets that survived the bombing of the Second World War, gathered around the Sahat Kula clock tower and the Osmanagić mosque. The opening hours say more about the house than anything else could. It is open from seven in the morning until midnight, every single day of the week, with no closing day and no break between services. A kitchen kept running for seventeen hours a day is serving a local trade rather than a visiting one — breakfast, a working lunch, an evening, and whatever comes after — and in a capital city of two hundred thousand people that is a particular kind of institution. We hold no website for it, so nothing is written here about what comes out of the kitchen. The telephone number is the way to ask. Stara Varoš lies on the left bank of the Ribnica, where it meets the Morača, and is reached on foot from the centre in a few minutes over the old Adži-paša bridge. It is the part of Podgorica most visitors are sent to look at, and one of the few where the streets still follow their old lines. You will find Pod Volat at Trg Vojvode Bećira Osmanagića 1, 81000 Podgorica.

Konoba Lanterna is a small tavern on Kralja Nikole in the old centre of Podgorica. A konoba is a particular thing along this coast and its hinterland — the traditional Adriatic eating house, historically the room where wine was kept — and the word sets the expectation better than the English "restaurant" would. The house describes itself plainly and does not oversell: a small and pretty konoba in the middle of the city, an interior of stone and wood, attentive staff and traditional cooking. Those three together are what a konoba is meant to be, and the room is honest about being small. Two practical things. Tables can be reserved through the restaurant's own site, which matters in a room of this size. And the kitchen delivers food and drink to any address in the Podgorica area, which is unusual for a traditional house and useful if you are staying outside the centre. It opens every day from midday to eleven at night, straight through, with no closing day. Kralja Nikole is one of the main streets of the newer town, running south-west from the centre and walkable from the old quarter across the Morača. It is named after Nikola I, the last king of Montenegro, and it is one of the arteries the city grew along after the war, so the address puts the konoba among shops and offices rather than in the tourist streets — which is generally where the cooking is better. You will find Konoba Lanterna at Kralja Nikole 36, 81000 Podgorica.
