Do-Do Café stands on the Šetalište Pet Danica in Herceg Novi. That address is the whole point of the place, so it is worth explaining: the Šetalište Pet Danica is the seafront promenade, a paved walk that runs for several kilometres along the water at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, with the sea on one side and the town climbing the hill on the other. Peters Pie & Coffee sits at number 18 on the Šetalište Pet Danica, the seafront promenade in Herceg Novi, eighteen doors along from the sea end and a short walk from the old town steps. The name says what it sells: pies and coffee. A pie shop is an unusual thing on this coast. Montenegrin baking runs to burek and to the sweet pastries of the Ottoman tradition, and the filled savoury pie is a northern European habit — so this is a house doing something the promenade does not otherwise offer, which is generally why a place like it survives among cafés that all serve the same three things. It opens at eight in the morning and closes at nine at night, every day of the week with no closing day. Those are daytime hours by the standards of the promenade, where the cafés either side run past midnight, and they say this is a bakery-café rather than a bar: breakfast, a coffee in the afternoon, something taken away for the walk. Herceg Novi lies at the mouth of the Bay of Kotor, half an hour along the E65 from Morinj, and the promenade is the flattest way to see the town — the rest of it is stairs. Ćatovića Mlini is a konoba in Morinj, at the head of the Risan bay in the Boka Kotorska. The name means Ćatović's mills, and it is literal: the restaurant occupies old watermills, on the streams that come down off the Orjen massif and run into the bay a few metres further on. The water is the reason the mills were built here and the reason the place looks the way it does. It calls itself a konoba — the traditional Adriatic eating house rather than a restaurant in the international sense — and the greeting on its own site is direct: with us, you are the star. Tables stand outside among the water and the trees, which is where almost everyone sits. The hours are simple and the same every day of the week: midday to half past ten at night, straight through, with no closing day. Booking is the sensible course in season — this is one of the best-known addresses on the bay and the Boka fills up between June and September. Morinj lies on the E65, the coast road that runs around the bay from Herceg Novi towards Kotor. Verige 65 stands on the water at Kostanjica, on the coast road through the Bay of Kotor. The name is the address: Verige is the strait, the narrowest point of the whole bay, where the two sides come within a few hundred metres of one another. The word means chains, after the chain that was once drawn across the water to keep ships out. The restaurant sits on that narrows and describes itself as a place of unique energy. It is arranged for more than dinner. Alongside the kitchen the house takes events and weddings, which in this setting is the obvious use for a terrace over the water, and it keeps a gallery of its own on the site. The hours are long and identical every day: eight in the morning until midnight, with no break and no closing day. That covers a coffee on the way round the bay, a lunch, and a dinner as the light goes off the far shore. Kostanjica is between Morinj and Perast on the E65, about fifteen minutes' drive from either. The Verige strait is the point every boat entering the bay must pass, and the reason the inner Boka was defensible for six hundred years. Perast, with its two island churches out in the water, is the next village along and the most photographed spot on the whole bay — so this is a reasonable place to stop on the way there or back.
