Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets
La Porte, 35430 Saint-Jouan-des-Guérets
Lunch and dinner, seven days a week
The Auberge du Clos des Vignes is a country inn on the road between Saint-Malo and the Rance, ten minutes by car from the walled town and away from the summer crowds. Tony and Alexis run it as a pair, one in the kitchen and one in the room, and the cooking is French bistro food done with care: a market menu that changes with the week, meat from the region, fish from the coast, proper desserts. It opens for lunch and dinner every day of the week, which is rarer than it sounds around Saint-Malo, where many kitchens close on Mondays. The garden makes it a good choice for an evening when the town is full; parking is easy.

Balcón de María sits on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I in Santa Ponsa and sells itself as one place with every experience in it. That is a fair description of the range: pinchos and tapas, what it calls crispy pizza, and a cocktail bar, under one roof. The distinction between pinchos and tapas is worth knowing before you order. A pincho is a single mouthful on a piece of bread, held together with a stick and eaten standing, counted at the end by the sticks left on the plate; a tapa is a small dish. Both are Spanish, and few places on a Mallorcan resort strip bother to serve the first properly. The house keeps separate cards for breakfast, for children, for desserts and for cocktails, and delivers through Glovo, Just Eat, Uber Eats and On The Road — four services, which in a resort town means it is used by people staying nearby as much as by people walking past. It opens every day at half past twelve and runs to eleven at night, to midnight on Friday and Saturday. It is part of the same Mallorcan group as Mercader del Mar, a few doors along the same avenue, so the two are an easy pair to alternate between over a week without eating the same thing twice. Santa Ponsa is about twenty minutes west of Palma, and this avenue is where most of its kitchens are — a walk of a few minutes from the beach and from most of the apartments. You will find Balcón de María at Avinguda del Rei Jaume I 97, 07180 Santa Ponsa.

Las Olas is a fish restaurant on the Carrer de Ramon de Montcada, on the Costa de la Calma side of Santa Ponsa. Its own line for what it does is four words long and says everything: from the sea to the plate. The house publishes its menu as a document in four languages — Spanish, English, German and French — which is unusual and useful. It means you can read what is being served before you sit down rather than working it out from a board, and seven pages of it suggests a kitchen with more than a resort card. One thing to plan around: it is closed on Mondays. The rest of the week it opens at half past twelve and runs through to midnight without a break, which covers a late lunch, an early dinner and a late one at the same address. Tables are booked through the restaurant's own link page. Costa de la Calma adjoins Santa Ponsa to the west and is the quieter half of the same stretch of coast — residential rather than resort, a few minutes' walk from the beach and away from the main avenue. The name means calm coast and it is not marketing: the bay here is sheltered from the tramuntana, the north wind that closes the beaches on the other side of the island, which is why this corner of Mallorca fills up first in spring and empties last in autumn. You will find Las Olas at Carrer de Ramon de Montcada 18, 07180 Costa de la Calma.

Paco's Restaurant stands on the Carrer de Ramon de Montcada in Costa de la Calma, on the western edge of Santa Ponsa. It is one of the best-reviewed places in this part of the coast, and it sits on the same short street as Las Olas — a residential road a few minutes back from the water rather than a stretch of the resort avenue. The restaurant had a website and the domain no longer resolves, so nothing is written here about the kitchen: we can point at no source for it, and guessing would be worse than saying nothing. The telephone number works and is the way to ask what is on and to book a table. The opening hours are the same every day of the week, half past twelve to half past ten at night, with no closing day and no afternoon break — which in a resort where a good part of the strip shuts between three and seven is the practical thing to know. Costa de la Calma runs west from Santa Ponsa towards Peguera. It is the quieter side: houses and apartments rather than hotels, and a walk of a few minutes to either the beach or the main avenue. You will find Paco's at Carrer de Ramon de Montcada 13, 07183 Costa de la Calma.

Mestiza sits on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I in Santa Ponsa and does three things: burgers, prime steak, and thin, crisp American-style pizza. The full name says so outright, which saves anyone the trouble of guessing — this is not a Mallorcan kitchen and does not pretend to be one. The word mestiza means mixed, and the menu lives up to it. Alongside the main card there are separate lists for breakfast and for desserts, and the kitchen opens at eleven in the morning and runs to midnight, every day of the week without a closing day. Food is delivered through Just Eat. The site is kept in five languages — Spanish, English, German, French and Italian — which is an honest picture of who eats on this avenue in August. It belongs to the same Mallorcan group as Mercader del Mar and Balcón de María, a few doors along the same street, so the service and the standard are shared between them even though the kitchens are not. Santa Ponsa is about twenty minutes west of Palma by car, and the avenue runs from the bypass down towards the beach with most of the town's restaurants on it. Number 92 is towards the lower end, so this is a short walk from the sand rather than from the main road — worth knowing if you are coming back off the beach hungry. You will find Mestiza at Avinguda del Rei Jaume I 92, 07180 Santa Ponsa.

Avinguda del Rei Jaume I 103, 07180 Santa Ponsa

Mercader del Mar stands on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I, the avenue that runs the length of Santa Ponsa on the south-west coast of Mallorca. The kitchen is Mediterranean and its single named speciality is paella — which on this island means the rice is the dish rather than a side, and it is worth ordering as one. Two practical points the house makes about itself. It is open all year, which is not ordinary in a resort town where a good part of the strip shuts from November to March. And the kitchen runs straight through, midday to midnight, every day of the week — so there is no dead afternoon between services, the thing that catches out anyone eating on a northern European clock. There are separate cards for children and for desserts, and the site is kept in Spanish, English and German, which tells you plainly who eats here. The restaurant belongs to a Mallorcan group that also runs Puerto Portals and several houses along this avenue, so the standard is consistent between them and the menus have a family resemblance. Santa Ponsa lies about twenty minutes west of Palma, on a sheltered bay with a sand beach, and the avenue is its main street. You will find Mercader del Mar at Avinguda del Rei Jaume I 103, 07180 Santa Ponsa.
Santa Ponsa
Carrer de Chopin 5, 07180 Santa Ponsa
Thursday to Monday from 18:00, dinner until 22:30; closed Tuesday and Wednesday; open all year
Adelfas is a restaurant in a villa on a quiet street of Santa Ponsa, run by Jens and Nicole Bräuning, with a large sun terrace under the trees and a pavilion for bigger tables. Everything is made in the house - the couple say they cook and serve with heart rather than follow a production line - and the menu leans to fresh, gourmet plates: a butterfish ceviche with mango foam is the dish people mention, alongside fish, lamb and homemade desserts. It opens in the evening only, from six, and closes on Tuesday and Wednesday; the terrace makes it a good choice for a long summer dinner, and there is parking directly outside. Open all year, which in Santa Ponsa is not a given.
Saint-Malo
128 Chaussée du Sillon, 35400 Saint-Malo
Daily from breakfast; hours vary with the season
Favorite Coffee is a coffee shop on the Sillon, the long seafront promenade, run by three sisters who wanted a place that serves breakfast all day. That is what it does: eggs, pancakes, granola bowls, avocado toast and fresh juices from morning until the afternoon, with specialty coffee, matcha and homemade cakes alongside. The room is bright and the tables outside face the beach across the road. It is the kind of place for a slow morning after a swim, or a late breakfast on a day when the tide has taken the beach away. Weekends are busy; midweek mornings are the calm ones.
Saint-Malo
3 Chaussée du Sillon, 35400 Saint-Malo
Daily 12:00-14:30 and 19:00-22:00; tea room 15:00-17:30
The Brasserie du Sillon stands right on the seafront promenade, ten minutes on foot from the ramparts, with the beach and the tide in front of the windows. It is a seafood house first: oysters and whelks from the bay, a Royal Sillon platter stacked with crab, langoustines and prawns, grilled fish of the day and moules-frites. The menu changes every six to eight weeks with the season, and there is meat for those who did not come for the sea. Between lunch and dinner the room becomes a tea room, which makes it a good stop after a long walk along the Sillon. The dining room is level and accessible, and the terrace faces the water.
Saint-Malo
7 Esplanade Commandant Yves Menguy, 35400 Saint-Malo
Daily 11:45-14:30 and 18:45-21:30; continuous service at the weekend
The Crêperie Solid'Or is named after the Solidor tower that stands a few steps away at the mouth of the Rance, and it does the one thing a Breton crêperie should do well. The galettes are made from organic buckwheat flour, the classic complète with ham, egg and cheese alongside fillings with andouille, scallops or goat's cheese and honey, and the sweet crêpes come with salted-butter caramel made in house. Cider is served in bowls, as it should be. At the weekend the kitchen stays open through the afternoon, which suits a late return from the beach at Bas-Sablons. It fills up quickly in summer; the terrace on the esplanade is the place to wait.
Saint-Malo
9 Rue du Dick, 35400 Saint-Malo
Monday to Friday 12:00-14:00 and 19:00-21:30; Saturday and Sunday 12:00-14:30 and 19:00-22:00
Le Globe-Trotter is a small restaurant in the heart of the Cité d'Alet, between the Solidor tower and the Bas-Sablons beach, and its name is the menu: dishes gathered from journeys, cooked with what the Breton markets offer. A Thai curry can follow a Breton fish tartare, a tagine a plate of grilled prawns, and the card changes often enough that regulars find something new each visit. At midday there are set lunch formulas between about €15 and €22, which makes it one of the better-value sit-down lunches on this side of the harbour. The terrace is sheltered and there is room for families; evenings are calmer than in the walled town.
Saint-Malo
8 Allée du Marégraphe, 35400 Saint-Malo
Lunch and dinner; closed Sunday evening, Monday and Thursday evening
La Corderie sits on the Cité d'Alet peninsula in Saint-Servan, on the far side of the harbour from the walled town, with a terrace that looks across the estuary of the Rance to Dinard. The same family has run it for more than thirty-five years, and the kitchen has stayed with what the boats bring in: sole and bass from the bay, scallops in season, lobster from the tank, a fish soup that regulars order without opening the menu. It is a quiet, unhurried place, better for a long lunch with the view than for a quick bite. Booking is wise for the terrace on a sunny day.
