Adega Caloura is a restaurant in an old wine cellar in Caloura, the fishing hamlet below Água de Pau where the vineyards run down to the sea in stone-walled terraces. The vaulted room, the barrels and the candlelight make it the most atmospheric dinner on this stretch of the south coast, and it is small enough that a table is worth reserving. The kitchen is fish and seafood first: grilled tuna and tuna tartare when the boats bring it in, garlic prawns, octopus, with a couple of vegetarian plates and a long list of Azorean and mainland wines to go with the cellar. It opens only in the evening and only on some days of the week, which vary through the year - a phone call before driving down saves a wasted trip.

Adelfas is a restaurant in a villa on a quiet street of Santa Ponsa, run by Jens and Nicole Bräuning, with a large sun terrace under the trees and a pavilion for bigger tables. Everything is made in the house - the couple say they cook and serve with heart rather than follow a production line - and the menu leans to fresh, gourmet plates: a butterfish ceviche with mango foam is the dish people mention, alongside fish, lamb and homemade desserts. It opens in the evening only, from six, and closes on Tuesday and Wednesday; the terrace makes it a good choice for a long summer dinner, and there is parking directly outside. Open all year, which in Santa Ponsa is not a given.

Casa Galli is a farmhouse restaurant on the hillside at Albareto above Ziano, in the Val Tidone, where the family has cooked for guests since 1997 and the view from the terrace is vineyards down to the valley. The dining room is old stone with a fireplace and candles; in summer the tables move out under the porticoes, and there is a play area for children, which makes it an easy Sunday lunch for families. The food is Piacenza cooking without shortcuts: house cured meats, gnocco fritto, tortelli and pisarei made in the kitchen, roasts, and the Gutturnio of the hills to drink. It opens Wednesday to Sunday, lunch and dinner except Sunday evening; there are rooms and apartments for anyone who wants to stay after the wine.

La Colombaia is an agriturismo above Ziano Piacentino, in the westernmost of the Piacenza valleys. The land was in the family for years before Guido turned it into an agriturismo, and the kitchen is described by the house as cucina piacentina doc — the cooking of this province and no other. The estate is arranged for eating outdoors without depending on the weather: three dining rooms stand in the open but under cover, all of them looking out over the valley, with a bar area for drinks and two further rooms inside. That combination is worth knowing in a region where a summer evening can turn without warning. It sits among the hills and is used as a starting point for the country around it — mountain biking, riding and walking all begin at the door, and the valley is crossed by roads that lead through the historical, scenic and gastronomic parts of the province. The Colli Piacentini are wine country: Gutturnio, Ortrugo and Malvasia are grown on these slopes, and Ziano Piacentino is one of the centres of that. Opening is limited and worth planning around. Friday evening only from eight to ten; Saturday lunch from half past twelve and dinner from eight; Sunday the same with lunch running until half past three. Monday to Thursday it is closed. Alabote stands on the Rua East Providence in Ribeira Grande, on the north coast of São Miguel. The building is the first thing the house talks about: an architecture built to hold contemporary, functional construction and the landscape together rather than to shut one out of the other, with the sunset as part of what you are there for. Fresh fish is what it stakes its name on — the best of the Azorean sea, as the house puts it, cooked carefully. An alabote is a halibut, so the name says the same thing. What sets it apart from most restaurants on the island is the breadth of the menu. Alongside meat and fish there are vegetarian and vegan dishes as a proper part of the card, and the traditional Azorean repertoire is kept as well. In an archipelago whose cooking runs on beef, pork and fish, a kitchen that treats a vegan diner as a guest rather than a problem is worth knowing about in advance. Service is in two sittings — midday to half past three, then seven to ten — and it is closed on Wednesday. Ribeira Grande is the island's second town, about twenty minutes over the ridge from Ponta Delgada and forty from Ribeira Chã. Alliance Café opened in February 2021 in the garden of the Alliance Française de Banjul, in the institute's building on Kairaba Avenue. It was set up as a café and restaurant for everyone, bringing art, culture and food together in one place. Antica trattoria Del Tempio stands on Via Creta in Vicobarone, a hamlet of Ziano Piacentino in the Val Tidone. The name is the owners' own and says what kind of house it is: a trattoria, and an old one — the everyday restaurant of an Italian village rather than a destination built for visitors. The opening hours describe how it is used. Lunch is served every day except Wednesday, from midday to half past two. Dinner exists on Friday and Saturday only, from eight to ten. A kitchen arranged that way is cooking for people who eat their main meal in the middle of the day, which in this part of Emilia is still most of them, and it means a visitor planning an evening here on a Tuesday will find it closed. Vicobarone sits in the Colli Piacentini, the wine hills between the Po plain and the Apennine ridge. The Auberge du Clos des Vignes is a country inn on the road between Saint-Malo and the Rance, ten minutes by car from the walled town and away from the summer crowds. Tony and Alexis run it as a pair, one in the kitchen and one in the room, and the cooking is French bistro food done with care: a market menu that changes with the week, meat from the region, fish from the coast, proper desserts. It opens for lunch and dinner every day of the week, which is rarer than it sounds around Saint-Malo, where many kitchens close on Mondays. The garden makes it a good choice for an evening when the town is full; parking is easy.

Babi Gourmet & Wine sits inside Capital Plaza on Šeika Zaida, the business complex in the newer half of Podgorica. It is one of the more recent openings in the city and seats about ninety, which makes it a large room by local standards and a practical one for a group. The kitchen is deliberately international rather than Montenegrin, and the range is wider than most: tacos and tortillas alongside sandwiches, meat and fish specialities and salads, with vegetarian dishes treated as part of the menu rather than an afterthought. In a country whose restaurants lean heavily on grilled meat and Adriatic fish, that breadth is the reason to know about the place. The house describes what it is aiming at as a calm, pleasant and comfortable room, and the location follows from that — a business address rather than a tourist one, quieter in the evening than the streets around the old quarter. Tables can be reserved, and the kitchen delivers. It is open every day from eight in the morning until midnight, straight through. Capital Plaza is in the Preko Morače district, west of the river, and it is signposted — the tower is one of the taller buildings in the city, which makes it easy to steer towards on foot. Šeika Zaida is named after Sheikh Zayed of Abu Dhabi, whose foundation helped fund this part of the city, and it runs parallel to the main road out towards the airport. Balcón de María sits on the Avinguda del Rei Jaume I in Santa Ponsa and sells itself as one place with every experience in it. That is a fair description of the range: pinchos and tapas, what it calls crispy pizza, and a cocktail bar, under one roof. The distinction between pinchos and tapas is worth knowing before you order. A pincho is a single mouthful on a piece of bread, held together with a stick and eaten standing, counted at the end by the sticks left on the plate; a tapa is a small dish. Both are Spanish, and few places on a Mallorcan resort strip bother to serve the first properly. The house keeps separate cards for breakfast, for children, for desserts and for cocktails, and delivers through Glovo, Just Eat, Uber Eats and On The Road — four services, which in a resort town means it is used by people staying nearby as much as by people walking past. It opens every day at half past twelve and runs to eleven at night, to midnight on Friday and Saturday. It is part of the same Mallorcan group as Mercader del Mar, a few doors along the same avenue, so the two are an easy pair to alternate between over a week without eating the same thing twice. Santa Ponsa is about twenty minutes west of Palma, and this avenue is where most of its kitchens are — a walk of a few minutes from the beach and from most of the apartments. Bakkerij Sonnemans is a pastry bakery in Burgh-Haamstede, a dune village on the island of Schouwen-Duiveland in Zeeland. The family has run it for four generations, which in a village of this size makes the bakery a fixed point rather than a business. What is unusual is what grew around it. The same family runs a small hotel behind the bakery, on the Achterweg, and the hotel is also a museum: walking in from the bakery's terrace takes you into rooms furnished as they once were. It is described by the owners as a boutique hotel and museum in one, and it can be visited over a cup of coffee rather than only as a guest. The opening hours are short and want reading carefully, because they changed with the season. From September the bakery opens Friday from eight to five, Saturday from eight to four and Sunday from eight to five. Monday to Thursday it is closed altogether. Anyone driving over for a Tuesday morning coffee will find the door shut. Burgh-Haamstede sits behind the dunes at the western end of Schouwen-Duiveland, north of Walcheren across the Oosterschelde. Bonazza is a restaurant on the Donji put in Dobrota, the long waterfront settlement that runs north from Kotor along the shore of the bay. The house keeps no website of its own beyond a Facebook page, so what is set down here is what that page states: the address, the telephone number, seating outdoors, and a middle price band. Dobrota is worth understanding before you go looking for it. It is not a village with a centre but a single street some seven kilometres long, following the water, lined with the stone houses that Kotor's sea captains built in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. House numbers run high — this one is 170 — and addresses are found by the number rather than by any landmark. The kitchen is open from eight in the morning until midnight, every day of the week, with no closing day. That span is common along this coast and is what makes a waterfront restaurant usable as a breakfast stop as well as an evening one. The old town of Kotor, walled and a UNESCO World Heritage site, is a few minutes to the south, and the bay road continues north towards Perast and the Verige strait. Parking along the Donji put is on the road itself and fills up through the summer, so an early table or a late one is easier to come by than one at eight in the evening.
