FZRY - short for FitzRoy - is at Tschaval, where the road ends at the head of the Gressoney valley and Monte Rosa fills the view. A young team runs the bar and restaurant, which has a fireplace and two dining rooms that mix old alpine wood with a modern look. The kitchen reworks Aosta Valley classics with produce from nearby: fassone beef fillet with lime and pink pepper, beef cooked slowly and served with tuna sauce, fresh tagliolini with artichokes and guanciale, or cheek braised in Torrette red wine and served with polenta and glazed shallots. The menu changes with the seasons, and the bar pours cocktails and wines from many regions. Tables can be booked online, by phone or on WhatsApp.

Favorite Coffee is a coffee shop on the Sillon, the long seafront promenade, run by three sisters who wanted a place that serves breakfast all day. That is what it does: eggs, pancakes, granola bowls, avocado toast and fresh juices from morning until the afternoon, with specialty coffee, matcha and homemade cakes alongside. The room is bright and the tables outside face the beach across the road. It is the kind of place for a slow morning after a swim, or a late breakfast on a day when the tide has taken the beach away. Weekends are busy; midweek mornings are the calm ones.

Gloria Osteria is an Italian restaurant on Via Tivoli, in the Brera district of Milan. It belongs to the Big Mamma Group, which also runs rooms in Paris, Barcelona, Dublin and Dubai, and the Milan house is the group's Italian one — cooking the country it comes from rather than exporting it. The room is the argument. Seven hundred and forty square metres under eight tall windows, so it is full of daylight in a way few Milanese restaurants manage, furnished with coloured velvet armchairs and built around a counter of Giallo Siena marble. The house describes the look as 1960s glamour, and that is a fair summary: it is theatrical on purpose, and it photographs the way it is meant to. The kitchen is run by chef Manuel and his brigade, and works through the Italian regions rather than one of them, offered either as a tasting menu or à la carte. Cocktails and a selected Italian wine list are served at the marble counter. The group is a certified B Corporation. Service runs every day in two sittings, midday to half past two and half past six to a quarter past ten. Booking is advisable — this is one of the most heavily reviewed restaurants in the city, with close to twelve thousand ratings. Greek Village has been cooking Greek food in the Santa Clara area of Playa del Inglés for more than twenty years. It grew out of a Greek taverna in San Agustín and brought the same recipes a few kilometers along the coast. The menu is the classic taverna one: gyros, kleftiko - lamb roasted slowly until it falls off the bone - moussaka and grilled meats, with feta, Greek yogurt and Kalamata olives alongside, and a list of Greek wines to go with them. There is a children's menu. On weekdays the kitchen opens in the evening, at weekends from lunchtime; tables can be booked online at any hour, or by phone while the restaurant is open.

HoneyPie is a lunchroom on Achter de Houttuinen in Middelburg, and it wears its subject openly: the house motto is that a balanced diet is a piece of cake in each hand. Cake is the point here, and lunch is served around it rather than the other way round. Beyond the daytime menu the kitchen does three things worth knowing about in advance. There is a high tea, which is booked rather than walked into. There is a picnic, packed to be taken away — a sensible idea in a province where the coast and the dunes are twenty minutes from the front door. And there is cake to go, sold whole or by the slice, which is the reason to stop here on the way to somewhere else. It opens from nine in the morning until five in the afternoon, Tuesday to Sunday. Monday it is closed. Those are daytime hours in the strict sense: this is not a dinner restaurant, and arriving at seven in the evening will find it shut. Achter de Houttuinen runs along one of the old canals in the centre of Middelburg, a few minutes on foot from the abbey and the market square.
