Krk is the northern Adriatic's most accessible island, and for many Central European travellers it is the first taste of the Croatian coast. Sitting in the Kvarner Gulf just off Rijeka, it has been joined to the mainland since 1980 by the Krk Bridge, so you can simply drive on — no ferry timetable required. Rijeka's international airport sits on the island itself, at Omišalj, which makes arrivals unusually easy. Krk is among the largest of all the Adriatic islands, and it packs in a lot of variety. Krk Town, the walled old capital on the west coast, mixes Roman and medieval layers with a lively summer harbour. To the south, the long pebble beach at Baška lies below dramatic bare hills and is one of the best-known bathing spots in the Kvarner. On the east coast, the cliff-top village of Vrbnik guards Croatia's narrowest street and the vineyards behind it, source of the crisp local white Žlahtina. Between them lie fishing coves, Glagolitic heritage — the famous Baška tablet was found here — and easy day trips across the whole gulf.

How do I get to Krk?
Uniquely among the bigger Croatian islands, you can drive straight onto Krk across the Krk Bridge from near Rijeka — no ferry needed. Rijeka international airport is on the island itself at Omišalj, and the island is within easy driving distance of Slovenia, Austria, Italy and southern Germany, which makes it a popular self-drive destination.
