Pissouri
28is Oktovriou 3, 4607 Pissouri
Restaurant Monday to Saturday 18:00-22:00; outside bar Monday to Wednesday 11:00-16:00, Thursday to Saturday 11:00-late; closed Sunday
Steak House by Michael is in Pissouri village, up the hill from the bay, and since it opened in June 2017 it has been the place people drive to for a proper steak: prime cuts including USDA beef, cooked to order on the grill with a choice of sauces, and a wine list that goes well beyond the usual village selection. There is seafood, pasta and a few vegetarian plates for those who do not want meat, and the vegetables and herbs come from the family's own garden. Michael runs the room himself and the kitchen is in the hands of a trained chef; the place was renovated recently and is a step up from the tavernas without being stiff. The outside bar opens at lunchtime for a drink or a lighter plate; dinner is in the evening, Monday to Saturday. Booking is wise at the weekend.

Kastro is on Ampelonon, the vineyard road that runs down from Pissouri village to the bay. The house keeps no website of its own beyond a Facebook page, so nothing is written here about the kitchen. What the hours show is a restaurant run the traditional way, in two sittings rather than straight through: midday to half past three, then a break, then six to nine in the evening. That is the Cypriot pattern and it means the afternoon is genuinely closed — arriving at half past four will find the door shut, which catches out visitors used to all-day service on the resort strips. It is closed on Thursday. Every other day of the week runs the same two sittings, including Sunday. The evening service ends at nine, which is early for the eastern Mediterranean and early for Cyprus in particular. A table at half past seven is a safer plan than one at half past eight. Pissouri is split between the old village on the Cape Aspro ridge and Pissouri Bay below, a crescent of sand and pebble under white cliffs that holds a Blue Flag for water quality. Ampelonon connects the two, so this address is on the way between them — walkable downhill from the village and a stiff climb back, which is why most people drive it. Parking on the road is free and easy outside July and August. You will find Kastro at Ampelonon 73, 4607 Pissouri.

Pissouri Bay Cafe sits at number 57 D on Ampelonon, the road that runs down through the vineyards from the village to the bay. It keeps a Facebook page and no website, so nothing here describes what comes out of the kitchen. The hours describe a daytime café and nothing else: nine in the morning to five in the afternoon, Tuesday to Sunday, closed on Monday. There is no evening service at all. That is unusual enough on this coast to be the single most useful thing to know about the place — it is breakfast, a coffee, and lunch, and anyone walking down for supper will find it shut. Those hours also fit the bay rather than the village. Pissouri Bay is a crescent of sand and pebble under white cliffs, with a Blue Flag for water quality, a beach bar and water sports in summer; a café that opens at nine and closes at five is open for exactly as long as people are on the beach. The number given is a mobile. Pissouri lies midway between Limassol and Paphos on the south-west coast of Cyprus, and a car is genuinely useful here — the village, the bay and the sights around them are spread out and the buses are few. You will find Pissouri Bay Cafe at Ampelonon 57 D, 4607 Pissouri.

The Vineleaf Tavern stands on Ampelonon in Pissouri. The street name is worth translating: ampelonon is Greek for of the vineyards, and it is the road that runs down from the village towards Pissouri Bay through the vines. The valley here is farming country — table grapes, almonds, carob — and the road is named after what grows beside it. The house keeps no website, so nothing is set down here about its cooking. What can be said is the shape of its day: it opens at one in the afternoon and closes at ten at night, every day of the week, with no closing day and no break in between. That single unbroken afternoon-and-evening service is the ordinary pattern of a Cypriot village taverna, and it makes the place useful at the hours when a kitchen working two sittings would be shut — four in the afternoon, for instance, coming up from the beach. It calls itself a tavern rather than a restaurant, which in Cyprus points at meze and grilled food rather than at a written menu, though we can point at no source for what is actually served. The telephone is the way to ask. Pissouri lies on the south-west coast between Limassol and Paphos. You will find The Vineleaf Tavern on Ampelonon, 4607 Pissouri.

Alabote stands on the Rua East Providence in Ribeira Grande, on the north coast of São Miguel. The building is the first thing the house talks about: an architecture built to hold contemporary, functional construction and the landscape together rather than to shut one out of the other, with the sunset as part of what you are there for. Fresh fish is what it stakes its name on — the best of the Azorean sea, as the house puts it, cooked carefully. An alabote is a halibut, so the name says the same thing. What sets it apart from most restaurants on the island is the breadth of the menu. Alongside meat and fish there are vegetarian and vegan dishes as a proper part of the card, and the traditional Azorean repertoire is kept as well. In an archipelago whose cooking runs on beef, pork and fish, a kitchen that treats a vegan diner as a guest rather than a problem is worth knowing about in advance. Service is in two sittings — midday to half past three, then seven to ten — and it is closed on Wednesday. Ribeira Grande is the island's second town, about twenty minutes over the ridge from Ponta Delgada and forty from Ribeira Chã. You will find Alabote at Rua East Providence 68, 9600-524 Ribeira Grande.

Queijadas do Morgado on the Rua do Penedo in Vila Franca do Campo makes one thing, and it is the thing this town is known for across the whole archipelago: the queijada da Vila. The house calls them the fantastic queijadas of Vila Franca do Campo, the only ones — and it is not really an exaggeration, because the recipe belongs to this town. A queijada da Vila is a small baked tart of egg, sugar and milk in a thin pastry case, wrapped in paper and sold by the dozen. Despite the name — queijo is cheese — there is no cheese in it. They are eaten as a mid-morning thing with coffee and they are what Azoreans carry back to family on the mainland, which is why the shop is set up for taking away rather than sitting down. It opens every day from nine in the morning to seven in the evening, with no closing day, which for an island bakery is unusual and useful — Sunday included. Vila Franca do Campo was the first capital of São Miguel until an earthquake and landslide destroyed it in 1522. It lies on the south coast, about twenty minutes east of Ribeira Chã along the coast road. You will find Queijadas do Morgado at Rua do Penedo 20, 9680-146 Vila Franca do Campo.

O Silva has been cooking on the Rua Direita de Cima in Ribeira Grande since 1979 — more than forty years of the same kitchen, run on family recipes handed down through the generations. Regional character, tradition and freshness are the three things the house names for itself, in that order. It is unusually specific about what it is known for, which saves a visitor guessing. The famous dish is the Bife à Silva. Then there is arroz de cherne com miolo de camarão — wreckfish rice with shrimp — the espetada de cherne com camarão, cavaco, and filetes de abrótea, fillets of forkbeard. Cherne and abrótea are deep-water fish of these islands and are not things you will have eaten at home. Food is also prepared to take away, which the house calls flavours at home. It is closed on Monday. Tuesday to Saturday it serves lunch from midday to three and dinner from a quarter to seven until ten; on Sunday there is lunch only. The Rua Direita de Cima runs through the old centre of Ribeira Grande, the island's second town, on the north coast about forty minutes from Ribeira Chã. The drive crosses the middle of São Miguel over the ridge, past the Lagoa do Fogo, which makes the journey there worth as much as the meal at the end of it. You will find O Silva at Rua Direita de Cima 41, 9600-221 Ribeira Grande.
Água de Pau

Pérola do Oceano is a family restaurant in the village of Água de Pau, a few minutes up the hill from Ribeira Chã, where the owner cooks and the dining room is papered with postcards, photographs and notes left by guests from all over the world - the decoration has grown for years and is half the reason people come back. The food is Azorean home cooking, unfussy and generous: fried chicharros, the small mackerel of the islands, baked octopus, crab and fried prawns to start, a grilled beef tenderloin for those who want meat, and for dessert bean pudding or the house ice cream. Prices are village prices. It suits a family evening more than a formal one.
Água de Pau
Rua da Caloura 15, 9560-206 Água de Pau
Evenings only, from 19:00, a few days a week - the days change with the season, so call ahead
Adega Caloura is a restaurant in an old wine cellar in Caloura, the fishing hamlet below Água de Pau where the vineyards run down to the sea in stone-walled terraces. The vaulted room, the barrels and the candlelight make it the most atmospheric dinner on this stretch of the south coast, and it is small enough that a table is worth reserving. The kitchen is fish and seafood first: grilled tuna and tuna tartare when the boats bring it in, garlic prawns, octopus, with a couple of vegetarian plates and a long list of Azorean and mainland wines to go with the cellar. It opens only in the evening and only on some days of the week, which vary through the year - a phone call before driving down saves a wasted trip.
Água de Pau
Rua da Caloura 20, 9560-226 Água de Pau
Mon–Sun 11:00–22:00
Bar Caloura sits right on the water at Caloura, the small harbor below Água de Pau on the south coast of São Miguel. It began in the 1980s as the place where the local fishermen met, and it has kept that spirit: informal, with a terrace over the sea where the sound of the waves comes with the meal. The kitchen is about fresh fish and seafood - limpets, prawns and the catch of the day from the grill - alongside Portuguese dishes. The restaurant is accessible by wheelchair, takes reservations and also does takeaway.

Louvre Michaelense stands on the Rua António José d'Almeida in the middle of Ponta Delgada, the capital of São Miguel. The house keeps no website, so nothing here describes what it serves; what can be set down is the address, the hours and the name. The name is worth a sentence. Michaelense is the adjective for São Miguel — a person or a thing of this island — so the house calls itself the island's Louvre, which is a large claim made with a straight face and tells you it is a room that holds things as much as it is a place to sit. The hours describe an all-day room rather than a restaurant with services: eleven in the morning until midnight, without a break, six days a week. It is closed on Wednesday, which is the one thing to plan around. Thirteen hours in a stretch means a coffee at three in the afternoon and something at eleven at night are equally possible, and in a town where most kitchens shut between lunch and dinner that is the point. Ponta Delgada is about half an hour west of Ribeira Chã along the south coast, and this street is in the old centre, a few minutes from the harbour front and the city gates. You will find Louvre Michaelense at Rua António José d'Almeida 8, 9500-053 Ponta Delgada.

L'AperiPizza is an Italian pizzeria in the Centro Comercial Plaza on Calle Punta Pesebre in Costa Calma, in the municipality of Pájara on Fuerteventura. Its own line for what it does is the best summary anyone could write: quality Italian pizza, because life is too short to eat a bad one. The numbers behind that are unusually good. Ninety-eight per cent of two hundred and forty-seven people recommend it, and the price band is the lowest of the three the island's restaurants are sorted into — a combination that is rare anywhere and rarer on a resort coast. There is seating outdoors and pizza can be collected at the kerb. The hours want reading before you set out. It is closed on Monday and on Tuesday, both. From Wednesday to Sunday it opens at one in the afternoon and runs to half past ten at night without a break. Two closing days in a row is unusual here and catches people out at the start of a week's holiday. Costa Calma sits at the neck of the Jandía peninsula in the south of Fuerteventura, where the island narrows to a few kilometres between two coasts. The Centro Comercial Plaza is one of the small shopping centres set back from the beach road, so this is an address to walk to from the town rather than one you pass on the front — worth knowing, because it is easy to miss from the FV-2. You will find L'AperiPizza at Calle Punta Pesebre, Centro Comercial Plaza, Local D2, 35627 Costa Calma.

Steak House San Borondón stands on Calle L.T.U. in Costa Calma. It keeps no website, so what it serves beyond the steak in its name is not described here. The name is worth knowing, because it is not a family name. San Borondón is the phantom eighth island of the Canaries — a landmass that generations of islanders reported seeing on the western horizon, that appeared on Spanish charts for three centuries, and that several expeditions sailed out to find and never did. It is now understood to have been a mirage. Naming a restaurant after it is a local joke of a particular kind. The hours differ at the weekend, which is the practical thing to note. Monday to Saturday it opens at one in the afternoon and runs to eleven at night, straight through. On Sunday it opens only at five in the evening and closes at half past ten — so there is no Sunday lunch here. A steak house is a reasonable thing to find here rather than an incongruous one. Fuerteventura has almost no agriculture — the island is dry enough that goats are most of what it raises — so meat is shipped in on the same boats as everything else, and a house that makes beef its subject is making a choice rather than using what is to hand. Costa Calma is on the Jandía peninsula in the south of Fuerteventura, and the restaurant is a few minutes from the Playa de Sotavento, the long shallow lagoon beach that the town was built for. You will find Steak House San Borondón on Calle L.T.U., 35627 Costa Calma.

Rapa Nui is a surf bar on Punta los Molinillos in Costa Calma, and it is more than a place to eat: alongside the food and drink it runs a surf school and Segway excursions, and publishes a weekly programme of what is on. That combination is the point of it — the bar is the meeting place for the school rather than a restaurant that happens to have boards outside. It is open from nine in the morning until midnight, every day of the week, which covers breakfast before a lesson and a drink long after one. The setting explains the business. Costa Calma sits on the Jandía peninsula in the far south of Fuerteventura, on the Playa de Sotavento — a stretch of white sand and shallow lagoon several kilometres long. The trade winds blow across it almost without pause, which is why this coast is one of the best-known windsurfing and kitesurfing places in Europe and why a surf school sits on the beach road rather than in the town. Rapa Nui is the Polynesian name for Easter Island, which is an odd flag to plant in the Atlantic and tells you the register the bar is going for. The weekly programme is the thing to look at before arriving: what happens here changes by the day, and turning up on the wrong one means a quiet bar rather than the place the reviews describe. You will find Rapa Nui at Punta los Molinillos, 35628 Costa Calma.

kapé is a small coffee house tucked behind the shopping area of Costa Calma that does something no one else on the island does: it serves only coffee grown on Fuerteventura, roasted on the premises. On roasting days you can watch and ask, and the espresso, cappuccino and cold brew that come out of it are the reason people from other resorts drive over. It is also the breakfast place of Costa Calma - you put your own plate together from a list of small dishes, German and Spanish side by side, with waffles, cheesecake and croissants for the sweet half of the table, and tapas, sandwiches and burgers later on. Open weekdays only, nine to five, so plan it for a weekday morning.

El Bar de Marko stands on Calle Risco Blanco in Costa Calma, and by review count it is the best-known place to eat in the town. It keeps no website, so nothing here describes the kitchen — we can point at no source for it, and a guess would be worse than silence. What can be said is the shape of its week, and it is a simple one: half past twelve to ten at night, every day, with no closing day and no break between lunch and dinner. On a resort coast where a good many kitchens shut for the afternoon and take a day off in the week, a house that never does either is the reliable option — the answer when it is four in the afternoon, or when it is Monday. Calle Risco Blanco is named after the white cliff, which is what risco blanco means, and it runs back from the beach road into the town rather than along the front. Costa Calma lies at the neck of the Jandía peninsula in southern Fuerteventura, about an hour from the airport at Puerto del Rosario and twenty minutes from Morro Jable. Restaurante Costa Beach is on Calle Roque del Morro in Costa Calma. It keeps no website, so nothing is written here about what it serves; the telephone number is the way to ask. The hours are the useful part. It opens at half past ten in the morning and closes at half past ten at night, every day of the week, without a closing day and without the afternoon break that most Spanish kitchens take. Twelve hours straight through covers a late breakfast, a lunch at three, and a dinner — and on this coast the middle of that is the hard slot to fill. Roque del Morro is one of the streets running through the town between the FV-2 coast road and the beach. Costa Calma is laid out as a resort rather than as a village: it grew from nothing in the 1980s along the Playa de Sotavento, and the streets are named after the rocks and points of the peninsula. The town sits at the narrowest part of Fuerteventura, where the island is barely five kilometres across, with the Atlantic on both sides and the wind coming over from the east almost every day. That wind is the reason the beach here is famous and the reason an inland street can be a good deal more comfortable to eat in than the front, particularly in the afternoon. You will find Restaurante Costa Beach on Calle Roque del Morro, 35627 Costa Calma.

Greek Village has been cooking Greek food in the Santa Clara area of Playa del Inglés for more than twenty years. It grew out of a Greek taverna in San Agustín and brought the same recipes a few kilometers along the coast. The menu is the classic taverna one: gyros, kleftiko - lamb roasted slowly until it falls off the bone - moussaka and grilled meats, with feta, Greek yogurt and Kalamata olives alongside, and a list of Greek wines to go with them. There is a children's menu. On weekdays the kitchen opens in the evening, at weekends from lunchtime; tables can be booked online at any hour, or by phone while the restaurant is open.

Sawadee is one of three Thai restaurants of the same name in the south of Gran Canaria - the others are in Meloneras and San Agustín. This one is on Avenida de Gran Canaria in Playa del Inglés. Thai chefs cook in the style of Isaan, the north-east of Thailand: simple, strong flavors from fresh herbs, lime and fish sauce, with little sugar or butter. Pad thai, green curry (gaeng kiew waan) and pineapple fried rice are among the favorites, and a house platter brings several dishes together. The terrace is colorful and relaxed, the bar mixes cocktails, and everything on the menu can also be taken away.

Much of it is cooked in front of you. At the show-cooking stations guests choose their ingredients and watch them go onto the grill, and around them are stations for grilled fish and seafood, freshly cooked shellfish, paella, Iberian cold cuts and cheeses, Italian and Tex-Mex dishes, grilled meats, homemade desserts and soft-serve ice cream. Alliance Café opened in February 2021 in the garden of the Alliance Française de Banjul, in the institute's building on Kairaba Avenue. It was set up as a café and restaurant for everyone, bringing art, culture and food together in one place. The kitchen leans French and Italian, and the garden hosts regular evenings: French cheese and wine tastings, and traditional kora music played in the calm of the courtyard. It opens in the morning and stays open into the evening, later towards the weekend.

Soun is a café and restaurant on the Bertil Harding Highway, the coast road that runs along the Gambian Atlantic shore. It describes what it does as breakfast, brunch and beyond — Afro-fusion cooking with a nostalgic Gambian flair. The name carries the whole idea and the house explains it. Soun comes from the Wolof word souna, a variety of local millet, and it honours Joyce's grandmother, Kumba Soun Sanneh, who was born in the souna harvest season. A restaurant named after a grain and a grandmother is telling you where its cooking is rooted before you read a single dish. My Gambia Magazine described the room as a fusion of flavours with a welcoming atmosphere, warm lights, soft music and staff dressed to match the decor — every part of it, they wrote, reflecting Joyce's commitment. The kitchen keeps separate cards for breakfast, for lunch and dinner, and for drinks. It opens at half past seven in the morning on weekdays and half past eight at the weekend, running to eleven at night every day with no closing day. The coast road connects Bijilo, Kololi and Serrekunda, so this is a few minutes from the beach hotels and from the Bijilo Forest Park, where the red colobus monkeys come down to the path. Serrekunda is the largest town in the Gambia, considerably bigger than the capital, and the coastal strip below it is where almost everything a visitor uses sits. You will find Soun at Bertil Harding Highway 7, Serrekunda, Gambia.

The Gambian coast runs hot and, for half the year, humid; eating under trees rather than under a roof is the difference between a comfortable evening and an endured one, which is why the better-known places here are gardens. The hours are long and start early: half past eight in the morning until midnight, six days a week, with Sunday beginning at eleven instead. There is no closing day and no break between services, so breakfast, a long lunch and a late dinner all happen at the same address. Fajara lies between Bakau and Kololi, a little inland of the beach, and is one of the older residential quarters of the coastal strip — quieter than the Senegambia road and within a short taxi ride of it. Bijilo, with the forest park and the beach hotels, is a few kilometres south. Getting between them is done by shared taxi or by the green tourist taxis, and both are cheap; walking the coast road after dark is not the local habit. You will find The Fajara Garden Restaurant on 1st Street East, Fajara, Gambia.

Darboe's Restaurant is on the Senegambia Road in Kololi. It keeps no website, so nothing is written here about its cooking — only what can be checked, and the hours are the most telling part of that. It opens at five in the afternoon and closes at two the following morning, every day of the week. There is no lunch and no breakfast at all. A kitchen that does not open until the evening and runs until two is an evening and night house rather than a restaurant with a late licence, and anyone walking past at midday will find it closed. That fits the street. The Senegambia Road — known simply as the Strip — is the centre of the Gambian coastal tourist area, a run of restaurants, bars and hotels between Kololi and the beach, and it is busiest after dark. Darboe is one of the most common Gambian surnames, and a restaurant carrying it plainly is signalling a local house rather than a hotel dining room. Bijilo lies immediately south of Kololi, so this is a short taxi ride or a long walk from the beach hotels there. The Gambia is the smallest country on the African mainland — a strip of land either side of its river, nowhere much more than fifty kilometres across — and its entire tourist coast is this one stretch of shore, which is why so much of it is concentrated on a single road. You will find Darboe's Restaurant on Senegambia Road, Kololi, Gambia.
Kololi
Senegambia Strip, Kololi
Mon–Sun 11:00–22:00
Darboe's is a Gambian-owned bar and restaurant in the middle of the Senegambia Strip in Kololi. It opens for breakfast and stays busy late into the night, with a band playing on most evenings, sport on a big screen and free Wi-Fi. The kitchen serves Gambian and international food, and it is the Gambian dishes that bring people back: fish benachin, rice cooked in one pot with fish and vegetables in a spiced tomato stock; yassa, chicken or fish in a sharp onion and lemon sauce; and domoda, the peanut stew served with rice. There are tables outdoors.
Bijilo
Brusubi Turntable, Bertil Harding Highway, Bijilo
Daily 9:00-24:00
La Parisienne is the Gambian bakery-café that has been baking in the French way since 1993, and this is its Bijilo branch at the Brusubi turntable, a few minutes from the Senegambia strip and the Bijilo beach hotels. The counter holds croissants, pains au chocolat, tarts and celebration cakes; the kitchen behind it serves breakfast, sandwiches, shawarma, pizzas and a menu of everyday meals through the day, with proper coffee and fresh juices. The room is fully air-conditioned, which on a hot afternoon is half the point, and there are tables outside for the cooler hours. It opens in the morning and stays open late, so it works as much for a first coffee as for a late dessert after a beach day.
Orlando · Cafe · Vegetarian · Vegan
444 North Bumby Avenue, Orlando, FL 32803
Mo-Fr 07:00-20:00; Sa-Su 08:00-20:00
Drunken Monkey is a neighbourhood coffee house in the Milk District of Orlando, Florida, a short drive east of downtown. The shop describes itself as Orlando's local coffee shop, and the building is hard to miss: a small purple house on North Bumby Avenue that has become one of the district's landmarks. The coffee is roasted in house. Alongside it the kitchen bakes its own goods and cooks a menu that deliberately covers vegan, vegetarian and meat dishes rather than treating the first two as an afterthought, which is unusual enough in central Florida to be worth saying. Local artists hang work on the walls, and the art changes. Opening hours are long and simple: Monday to Friday from 7:00 am to 8:00 pm, Saturday and Sunday from 8:00 am to 8:00 pm. That covers breakfast, a working morning, lunch and an early dinner, and there is seating outdoors. The Milk District takes its name from the dairy at its centre and sits between downtown Orlando and the Audubon Park area. It is a walkable pocket of small independent businesses rather than a strip of chains, which makes it a reasonable base for a morning if you are staying in the east of the city. Orders can be placed ahead through the shop's own site if you would rather collect than wait, and the telephone is answered during opening hours. You will find Drunken Monkey at 444 North Bumby Avenue, Orlando, FL 32803.

DOMU is a ramen bar and Japanese kitchen inside East End Market, in the Audubon Park Garden District of Orlando, Florida. The first DOMU opened on this spot in November 2016. The East End Market location has carried a MICHELIN Guide Bib Gourmand award every year from 2022 through 2026, and in 2025 the kitchen was named a James Beard Award semifinalist for Best Chef: South. It also features in season 7 of the Netflix series Somebody Feed Phil. Dinner is served seven days a week: Sunday to Thursday from 5:00 pm to 10:00 pm, and on Friday and Saturday until 11:00 pm. Brunch runs on Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 2:30 pm. Happy hour is daily from 5:00 pm to 6:30 pm, and on Tuesdays it runs all night. One thing worth planning around: DOMU takes no reservations. Seating is walk-in only, first come, first served, which the restaurant describes as equal-opportunity dining, so arriving early on a Friday or Saturday evening is the safer bet. A gratuity of 20 percent is added automatically for parties of six or more. The restaurant closes on July 4, Thanksgiving, Christmas Eve and Christmas Day. You will find it at 3201 Corrine Drive, Suite 100, Orlando, FL 32803, inside East End Market, a food hall and market building a short drive north-east of downtown Orlando. Two further DOMU kitchens operate in Florida: one at Dr. Phillips on Restaurant Row in Orlando, and one at St. Johns Town Center in Jacksonville.

Rutina Coffee is a specialty coffee bar on Biscayne Boulevard in Edgewater, Miami. The shop pairs coffee with music culture and sells beans as well as serving them, so a bag can go home with you. What is on the bar is named openly, which is rarer than it should be. One of the house coffees is an Obata roasted by Finca's Coffee and grown in Santa Barbara, Honduras, at 1,400 to 1,600 metres, washed process, described as balanced and fruity with honey, a hint of nut, sweet vanilla and chocolate, and a citric mandarin note. If you care which farm your cup came from, this is a place that will tell you. The bar is open every day from 7:00 am to 6:00 pm. There is seating outdoors and wireless internet, which together make it usable for a working morning rather than only a quick stop, and breakfast and lunch are both served. Edgewater runs along Biscayne Bay between downtown Miami and the Design District. It is one of the fastest-changing parts of the city, largely residential towers now, and the ground-floor businesses along Biscayne Boulevard are what give the neighbourhood its daytime life. Biscayne Boulevard itself is US-1 through this stretch, so the address is simple to find whether you are driving down from the north or up from downtown. Beans bought here can also be ordered through the shop's own online store, which is the practical answer if you find something on the bar you want to keep drinking at home. You will find Rutina Coffee at 2001 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33137.

Sha Wynwood is a Mediterranean restaurant with Asian influences in the Wynwood district of Miami, established in 2022. It is arranged as three connected spaces — a restaurant, a terrace and a lounge — and the character of the place changes as the evening goes on. The kitchen describes its menu as Euro-Asian-American, built on local ingredients and its own recipes, with wines, champagnes and signature cocktails alongside. Dinner is the serious part of the night. Later the room turns over to live music and DJs, so an early table and a late one are two different experiences of the same address, and it is worth deciding which one you came for. Opening hours run Monday to Friday from 4:00 pm to 2:00 am, and Saturday and Sunday from 11:00 am to 2:00 am — so the weekend adds a daytime service the weekdays do not have. Reservations are taken by telephone. Wynwood is Miami's arts district, north of downtown, best known for the painted walls that cover much of the neighbourhood and for the galleries, breweries and shops that grew up around them. Northwest 25th Street sits in the middle of that, which makes this an easy stop to combine with an afternoon spent walking and looking. You will find Sha Wynwood at 97 Northwest 25th Street, Miami, FL 33127.

900 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132
Mo-Su 08:00-18:00
Sagrado is a cafe on Biscayne Boulevard in downtown Miami that calls itself a lifestyle cafe and means it as an instruction: the room is built for staying rather than for turning tables. Breakfast, coffee, brunch, happy hour and desserts are served all day. The kitchen leans Brazilian, which shows most clearly in two of its signatures. The Brigadeiro Collection is built around the Brazilian chocolate confection, and the Picanha Plate takes the cut of beef that is the centre of a Brazilian churrasco. Alongside those the bakery works from scratch every morning, and the coffee is single origin, pulled by the house baristas. The cafe opens every day from 8:00 am to 6:00 pm, with seating outdoors. Breakfast runs into brunch and brunch into an afternoon, so there is no narrow window to hit. Number 900 Biscayne Boulevard sits in Park West, at the northern edge of downtown Miami, a few minutes on foot from the Kaseya Center and from Museum Park with the Perez Art Museum and the Frost Museum of Science. If you are staying downtown without a car, this is one of the places you can reach without planning a journey around it. The Metromover runs through this part of downtown and is free, which makes the cafe an easy stop from most of the central hotels and apartments even without walking the whole way. Seating outdoors on Biscayne Boulevard is the pick in winter; in the middle of a Miami summer afternoon the inside is the wiser choice. You will find Sagrado at 900 Biscayne Boulevard, Miami, FL 33132.

Mo-Su 11:00-21:00
Shorty's BBQ is a barbecue restaurant on Southwest 40th Street in West Miami, one of several locations the business runs in South Florida. This is the West Miami branch. The menu is built around barbecue combinations, and the sides are as fixed a part of it as the meat: every combo arrives with the house coleslaw, golden French fries and garlic bread, with cornbread available in place of the bread for a small surcharge. All white meat can be requested for an extra dollar, five wings or a sausage can be added to any meal, and there are family feasts sized for a table rather than a person. Catering is offered as well, which tells you something about the portions. The restaurant is open every day from 11:00 am to 9:00 pm, so lunch and dinner are both covered and there is no closing day to plan around. Ordering ahead is possible through the restaurant's own site. Southwest 40th Street is Bird Road, one of the main east-west routes across Miami-Dade County, and this stretch is straightforward to reach by car with parking on site. That matters here: West Miami is not a neighbourhood most visitors walk through, and this is a place you drive to. Bird Road runs west from Coral Gables towards the Florida Turnpike, so the restaurant is a practical stop on the way in or out of the city rather than a detour. You will find Shorty's BBQ at 11575 Southwest 40th Street, Miami, FL 33165.

This is the restaurant of the Associação Agrícola de São Miguel — the island's farmers' association — at Campo do Santana. That ownership is the whole point of the place: the kitchen belongs to the people who raise the animals, and the house states plainly that its dishes are made with Azorean products. São Miguel is cattle country. The island is green the year round, the herds stand out in the open in every month, and Azorean beef and cheese are what the archipelago sends to the mainland. A restaurant run by the farmers' association is as close to the source as eating here gets, and it takes part in the regional programme that supports restaurants buying local produce. Some unusually practical detail is published: there are high chairs for babies and stain remover on hand, the technical sheets for every dish on the menu can be consulted on request — which for anyone with an allergy is worth more than a reassurance — and prices include VAT. It opens every day from midday to ten at night, straight through, with no closing day. Tables are booked through the restaurant's own site. Campo do Santana lies inland above the south coast, a few minutes from Ribeira Chã. You will find it at Campo do Santana, 9600-096 Ribeira Chã, São Miguel.
