Caupona

Caupona connects a meal in modern Pompei with the food and surroundings of the ancient city. Established in April 2016, the restaurant takes its name from the taverns where Pompeians once gathered to eat. Hand painted frescoes, warm lighting, solid wooden tables and terracotta dishes establish the setting, and wine can be served in small amphorae or traditional cups. Guests can also wear clothing inspired by Roman senators and matrons. The cooking follows two distinct directions. Historical menus explore ingredients and preparations associated with ancient Rome, while a contemporary menu offers Mediterranean dishes with a more familiar structure. The ancient selection includes several named five course menus, and separate land and sea tasting experiences provide a longer sequence of dishes. On the contemporary side, pasta includes mezzopaccheri with clams and Neapolitan friggitelli peppers, or tagliolini with Amalfi lemon cream, red prawn and bisque. Main dishes range from amberjack with cannellini beans and wild herbs to lamb shank with mushrooms and nduja. Beef braised in Falerno wine provides another connection with the surrounding region. Desserts include babà, ricotta and pear, tiramisu and a lemon filled with sorbet. There is an indoor dining room and an outdoor garden, giving the restaurant more than one setting for its archaeological theme. Caupona also organizes theatrical dining experiences inspired by classical stories and Roman life. Tables can be requested through the restaurant's own reservation form.
