Rates checked in September 2026. Under its single-fee structure, Airbnb charges most hosts 15.5%; Airbnb says other hosts typically pay between 14% and 16%. Exceptions depend on country and account type. Booking.com sets the commission rate in each accommodation agreement, and visibility programmes may increase it. This worked example uses a possible range of 15% to 25%. If Booking.com facilitates payment, the applicable payment terms and transaction cost are contract-specific. Our 3.9% cost contribution is included in the displayed total and contributes towards Stripe payment fees and refunds. BookNoFees earns nothing from it. Nothing is added at checkout and nothing is deducted from the owner. Fee models can change, so please check each platform’s current terms. About Hungary

Staying in Hungary

Hungary rewards travellers who look past a single postcard. Budapest anchors most trips, its two halves stitched together by the Danube: hilly Buda with its castle district and river views, and flat, restless Pest with grand boulevards, a famous Jewish Quarter and the ruin bars that grew out of its old courtyards. The city's thermal bath culture is a genuine ritual rather than a tourist stunt, from the neo-baroque grandeur of the Szechenyi complex to smaller neighbourhood spas fed by natural hot springs. Beyond the capital, distances shrink fast. Lake Balaton, Central Europe's largest lake, draws Hungarians every summer for swimming, sailing and lazy lakeside wine. The Tihany peninsula adds lavender fields and a hilltop abbey, while spa towns give the whole region a slower rhythm. Head northeast and the wine country deepens: Eger for robust reds and its Turkish-era castle, Tokaj for the golden sweet wines that made the region famous. A self-drive or rail trip links cities, lakes, cellars and hot springs without long transfers. Renting a home here, whether a Budapest apartment or a Balaton cottage, keeps you close to markets, bakeries and local life.

Good to know

Vacation rentals in Hungary — FAQ

What is the best time of year to visit Hungary?

Late spring through early autumn suits most trips. May, June and September bring warm days without peak crowds, ideal for Budapest walks and wine country. July and August are hottest and busiest around Lake Balaton, which is the summer swimming season. Winter has its own appeal in Budapest, when the thermal baths feel especially good and Christmas markets fill the squares.

Do I need a car, or is public transport enough?

Budapest is easy without a car thanks to trams, metro and buses. For Lake Balaton, the wine regions of Eger and Tokaj, and smaller spa towns, a car gives you far more freedom and lets you reach cellars and villages between the main stops. Trains connect the larger towns if you prefer not to drive.

Are Budapest's thermal baths worth visiting?

Yes. Bathing in naturally heated mineral water is part of everyday life in Hungary, not just a visitor attraction. The larger complexes have multiple indoor and outdoor pools, and quieter neighbourhood baths offer a more local feel. Bring a swimsuit, towel and flip-flops, and check current opening times and any renovation closures before you go.

What are Hungary's wine regions known for?

Tokaj is celebrated for its golden sweet wines and is one of the world's oldest classified wine regions. Eger is known for full-bodied reds, including the blend nicknamed Bull's Blood, alongside its castle and baroque streets. The volcanic hills around Lake Balaton produce crisp whites and are a quieter region to explore by car.

How does booking direct on BookNoFees work?

You can message the host before booking. For a booking request, Stripe first places a card hold for the full amount; the host has 48 hours to accept, and only then is the amount captured. Instant Book is charged immediately after Stripe confirms payment. Do not transfer the booking amount directly to the host. The displayed total already includes the 3.9% cost contribution for Stripe payment fees and refunds.

Why can direct booking be better value for a Hungary trip?

BookNoFees deducts no commission from the amount set by the host. The displayed total includes a 3.9% cost contribution for Stripe payment fees and refunds, and BookNoFees earns nothing from it. Nothing is added at checkout.
