What is the best time of year to visit Hungary?
Late spring through early autumn suits most trips. May, June and September bring warm days without peak crowds, ideal for Budapest walks and wine country. July and August are hottest and busiest around Lake Balaton, which is the summer swimming season. Winter has its own appeal in Budapest, when the thermal baths feel especially good and Christmas markets fill the squares.
Do I need a car, or is public transport enough?
Budapest is easy without a car thanks to trams, metro and buses. For Lake Balaton, the wine regions of Eger and Tokaj, and smaller spa towns, a car gives you far more freedom and lets you reach cellars and villages between the main stops. Trains connect the larger towns if you prefer not to drive.
