Rates checked in September 2026. Under its single-fee structure, Airbnb charges most hosts 15.5%; Airbnb says other hosts typically pay between 14% and 16%. Exceptions depend on country and account type. Booking.com sets the commission rate in each accommodation agreement, and visibility programmes may increase it. This worked example uses a possible range of 15% to 25%. If Booking.com facilitates payment, the applicable payment terms and transaction cost are contract-specific. Our 6.9% cost contribution is included in the displayed total and contributes towards Stripe payment fees and refunds. Nothing is added at checkout and nothing is deducted from the owner. Fee models can change, so please check each platform’s current terms. Sources: Airbnb Help Center and Booking.com General Delivery Terms.

One country. Many favorite places.

Popular places to stay in New Zealand

New Zealand packs an extraordinary range of landscapes into two long, narrow islands, and it has built its reputation on clean, green scenery and open-air adventure. On the South Island, Queenstown is the country's adventure capital, a lakeside resort town ringed by mountains where bungee jumping, skiing and jet boats sit alongside more relaxed lake and vineyard days. To the west, Fiordland National Park guards the fjords, and Milford Sound — with its sheer cliffs and waterfalls — is one of New Zealand's most famous sights. The North Island offers a different mood: Auckland, the largest city and main international gateway, spreads across harbours beneath the Sky Tower, while the subtropical Bay of Islands to the north draws visitors for sailing, beaches and early colonial history. Inland, Rotorua bubbles with geothermal springs, geysers and steaming mud, and remains a centre for Māori culture and tradition. New Zealand is also serious wine country: Marlborough is world-renowned for Sauvignon Blanc, Central Otago near Queenstown for Pinot Noir, and Hawke's Bay for its reds. With relatively short distances between very different regions, it is an easy country to explore slowly by car, staying a few nights in each place.

Vacation rentals in New Zealand: FAQ

Book vacation apartments and holiday homes safely with BookNoFees ↗
When is the best time to visit New Zealand?

New Zealand's seasons are opposite to the northern hemisphere, with summer around December to February and winter around June to August. Summer suits hiking, lakes and the coast, while winter is the season for skiing around Queenstown and the Southern Alps. Spring and autumn are quieter shoulder seasons. Weather can change quickly, especially in the mountains and fjords, so check current forecasts for your route.

How do I travel between the North and South Islands?

The two main islands are separated by Cook Strait, crossed by passenger and vehicle ferries between Wellington and Picton, and there are also domestic flights linking the main cities on each island. Many visitors hire a car or campervan and combine driving with a ferry crossing, since distances between regions are manageable and the drives themselves are a big part of the experience.

What is there to do in Queenstown and Fiordland?

Queenstown is known as an adventure hub, with activities such as bungee jumping, jet boating and skiing in winter, plus lake cruises and vineyard visits for a gentler pace. Nearby Fiordland National Park protects the fjords, where Milford Sound is a signature attraction reached by scenic road or on boat cruises. Multi-day walking trails in the region are popular in the warmer months and often need advance planning.

Where should I go for geothermal sights and Māori culture?

Rotorua on the North Island is the best-known destination for geothermal activity, with geysers, hot springs and bubbling mud pools, and it is also an important centre for Māori culture, with cultural experiences and performances available. The wider central North Island has further geothermal and volcanic scenery, so it pairs well with a few nights based in or around Rotorua.

How does booking direct with BookNoFees work?

You can message the host before booking. For a booking request, Stripe first places a card hold for the full amount; the host has 48 hours to accept, and only then is the amount captured. Instant Book is charged immediately after Stripe confirms payment. Do not transfer the booking amount directly to the host. The displayed total already includes the 6.9% guest fee on the host price, covering payment processing, refund handling and payment risks.

Why book a New Zealand rental without commission?

BookNoFees deducts no commission from the amount set by the host. The displayed total includes a 6.9% guest fee on the host price, covering payment processing, refund handling and payment risks. Nothing is added at checkout.
