The Cayman Islands sit in the western Caribbean, a trio of flat coral islands roughly 700 kilometres south of Miami where the water tends to stay clear and glassy. Grand Cayman is the busy one, home to the capital George Town and to Seven Mile Beach, a long ribbon of pale sand lined with resorts, condos and casual beach bars along the sheltered western shore. Out on the North Sound, Stingray City lets you stand waist-deep on a sandbar while wild southern stingrays glide around your legs — one of the region's signature half-day trips. Divers come for the wall dives, easy reefs and wrecks such as the USS Kittiwake, and the diving only gets quieter on the two Sister Islands. Cayman Brac rises to a dramatic bluff, while tiny Little Cayman is all sleepy lanes, nesting boobies and the famous Bloody Bay Wall dropping into the deep. Ashore, families visit the Cayman Turtle Centre, wander the ironshore oddity called Hell, or take in the view from the Camana Bay observation tower. English is the official language and the local dollar is pegged to the US dollar, so trip planning is refreshingly straightforward. It's an easy-going, upscale destination that rewards slow days and repeat visits.

When is the best time to visit the Cayman Islands?
The dry season from roughly December to April brings the most reliable sunshine, calm seas and the best diving visibility, which is why it is also the busiest and priciest stretch. Late spring and early summer are quieter and still lovely. The Atlantic hurricane season runs June through November, with the highest risk typically late summer into autumn, so check forecasts and consider travel insurance if you go then.
Do I need a car to get around Grand Cayman?
If you are staying on Seven Mile Beach you can happily walk, cycle or use taxis and public minibuses to reach George Town and nearby beaches. A rental car is worth it if you want to explore the East End, Rum Point or heritage sites at your own pace. Remember that Caymanians drive on the left. On the smaller Sister Islands, distances are short and many visitors get by with a bike or an occasional taxi.
Is the Cayman Islands a good place for diving and snorkelling?
It is one of the Caribbean's benchmark dive destinations. You get warm, exceptionally clear water, dramatic wall dives, easy reefs close to shore and wrecks such as the USS Kittiwake. Little Cayman's Bloody Bay Wall is world-renowned, and Stingray City is a bucket-list snorkel and shallow dive. Beginners will find plenty of gentle reef sites and dive schools, while experienced divers can chase the deep drop-offs.
What is Stingray City and is it safe?
Stingray City is a shallow sandbar in Grand Cayman's North Sound where wild southern stingrays gather and let visitors wade, snorkel and photograph them up close. It is generally considered safe when you follow your guide's instructions — shuffle rather than step, don't grab the animals and let them come to you. Trips run daily by boat from several marinas and are popular with families and cruise passengers.
What currency and language should I expect?
English is the official language, so communication is easy for most international travellers. The local currency is the Cayman Islands dollar, which is pegged to the US dollar; US dollars are widely accepted, though you may receive change in local currency. Cards are accepted almost everywhere. Always confirm which currency a price is quoted in before you pay, as the two are not one-to-one.
