The Costa Brava — the "wild coast" — runs along the northern edge of Catalonia, where the Pyrenees seem to tumble into the sea in a jumble of pine-clad headlands, red cliffs and small hidden coves. Its character is different from the flatter resorts to the south: here the coastline folds in and out, and some of the best beaches are tiny calas reached on foot along the Camí de Ronda coastal path. Tossa de Mar guards a walled medieval old town above the water, Lloret de Mar brings the busier resort energy and gardens, while further north the whitewashed lanes of Cadaqués — long a haven for artists, Salvador Dalí among them — sit almost at the tip of the wind-scoured Cap de Creus. Hilltop Begur presides over a string of picture-book coves like Aiguablava and Sa Tuna, and the fishing villages of Calella de Palafrugell and Llafranc keep an unhurried charm. Inland, the handsome city of Girona is an easy day out, with its cathedral, colourful riverfront and tangled old Jewish quarter.

When is the best time to visit the Costa Brava?
June and September are sweet spots — warm, swimmable and less crowded than peak July and August. Spring and autumn are lovely for walking the Camí de Ronda coastal path and exploring towns, though the sea is cooler and some seasonal businesses may be closed outside summer.
How is the Costa Brava different from the Costa Blanca or Costa del Sol?
It is generally rockier, greener and more indented, with many small coves rather than long continuous beaches. The mood tends to feel more low-key and scenic outside the main resort of Lloret de Mar, which appeals to travellers wanting nature, coastal walks and characterful old towns.
How do I get to the Costa Brava?
Girona airport is closest, while Barcelona airport offers far more connections and sits within easy reach. Trains serve Girona and some coastal towns, but a car is genuinely useful here for reaching the smaller coves and hilltop villages that public transport doesn't always cover well.
Is the Costa Brava good for a quieter, scenic holiday?
