Crete is a country unto itself: the biggest of the Greek islands, long enough that driving end to end takes the better part of a day, and varied enough that you can swim a turquoise lagoon in the morning and hike a mountain gorge the same week. Its story runs deep. The Bronze Age Minoans built Europe's first great civilisation here, and their palace at Knossos still draws crowds outside Heraklion. Later came the Venetians and Ottomans, whose harbours, lighthouses and mosques still shape the old towns of Chania and Rethymno. Beyond the history, this is an island of dramatic landscapes: the White Mountains and the Samaria Gorge in the west, the Lasithi plateau and Mirabello Bay in the east, and beaches from the pink sands of Elafonissi to the shallow lagoon of Balos. Cretan food, hospitality and village life feel distinct from the rest of Greece.

When is the best time to visit Crete?
Late spring (May and June) and early autumn (September and early October) are widely considered the sweet spot: warm sea, comfortable walking weather and fewer crowds than the July-August peak, when temperatures soar and beaches fill. The Samaria Gorge is typically open from around May to October, weather permitting, and closes over winter. Winter is quiet and mild on the coast but wet, with snow on the high mountains and many seasonal tavernas and hotels closed.
Do I need a car to get around Crete?
For most visitors, yes. Crete is large and its best beaches, gorges and villages are spread out and often poorly served by public transport. Buses (KTEL) link the main north-coast towns like Chania, Rethymno, Heraklion and Agios Nikolaos reasonably well, but reaching places such as Elafonissi, Balos or the Lasithi plateau is far easier with your own car. There are two main airports, Heraklion (HER) and Chania (CHQ), and rental cars are widely available at both.
How do I get to Balos and Elafonissi beaches?
Both are in the far west and take effort to reach. Elafonissi, famous for its pink-tinged sand and shallow lagoon, is roughly an hour and a half by car from Chania on winding roads. Balos lagoon, on the Gramvousa peninsula, is reached either by a rough drive to a car park followed by a downhill walk, or by boat tour from Kissamos. Both get very busy in summer, so arriving early or later in the day helps avoid the crowds and the midday heat.
What are the must-see historical sites?
Knossos, just outside Heraklion, is the most famous: the sprawling palace complex at the heart of Minoan civilisation, best paired with the Heraklion Archaeological Museum which holds the finest Minoan artefacts. Other Minoan palaces include Malia on the north coast and Phaistos in the south. Beyond the Bronze Age, the Venetian harbours of Chania and Rethymno, and the island fortress of Spinalonga off Elounda, are among the most atmospheric sites.
Is the Samaria Gorge hike suitable for everyone?
It is a serious full-day walk of roughly 16 kilometres, mostly downhill on rocky ground, ending at the coastal village of Agia Roumeli on the Libyan Sea, from where you catch a boat and then a bus back. It rewards reasonably fit walkers with dramatic cliffs and the narrow 'Iron Gates', but it is demanding on knees and not ideal in the fierce midsummer heat. Good footwear, water and an early start are essential, and the trail is closed in winter.
Which part of Crete should I base myself in?
It depends on your priorities, and many visitors split their stay. The west around Chania suits those drawn to old-town charm, the White Mountains and the wildest beaches. The centre around Heraklion and Rethymno puts you near the major Minoan sites and good beaches on both coasts. The east around Agios Nikolaos and Elounda offers Mirabello Bay, Spinalonga and a more relaxed pace. Given the distances, staying in two different areas often works better than trying to see everything from one base.
