Elba is the biggest island in the Tuscan Archipelago, a mountainous scatter of granite, iron-red cliffs and turquoise coves roughly ten kilometres off the mainland at Piombino. For an island so compact you can drive its length in an afternoon, it hides an extraordinary variety of shorelines: white pebble bays on the west coast, dark volcanic sand near the old mining country in the east, and sheltered swimming spots tucked below hill towns. Portoferraio, the harbour capital, still wears the Medici fortifications that guarded it for centuries, and it was here, in 1814, that a defeated Napoleon arrived to serve his brief exile before slipping back to France the following spring. Away from the water, Monte Capanne rises past a thousand metres, its slopes crossed by walking trails and an open-basket cable car that lifts you to the roof of the archipelago. Add vineyards, seafood trattorias and a season that stretches comfortably into September, and Elba feels less like a single resort than a whole country in miniature. Reaching it is simple: car ferries cross from Piombino in about an hour, several times a day in high season.

How do I get to Elba?
The usual route is the car ferry from Piombino on the Tuscan mainland to Portoferraio, which takes around an hour and runs several times a day, with more frequent crossings in summer. A few sailings also serve Rio Marina and Cavo. Piombino is reachable by train and road; the small airport at Marina di Campo handles limited seasonal flights.
When is the best time to visit Elba?
Late May, June and September are the sweet spot: the sea is warm enough to swim, prices are gentler than peak August, and the coastal paths are pleasant to walk. July and August are the busiest, when Italian families arrive en masse. Spring and early autumn suit hikers and anyone who prefers the beaches uncrowded.
Do I need a car on Elba?
A car makes exploring far easier, since the best beaches and hill villages are spread around the coast and served only patchily by bus. Many visitors bring a vehicle across on the ferry or rent one on arrival. Within a single town such as Portoferraio or Capoliveri you can manage comfortably on foot, and scooters are popular for shorter hops.
Which part of Elba should I stay in?
Portoferraio suits first-timers who want history, ferries and services on the doorstep. Marina di Campo and Procchio have the broad family beaches; Capoliveri and Porto Azzurro on the east side offer lively evenings and coastal coves; Marciana Marina and the western hills appeal to walkers and those chasing Monte Capanne. Choose by whether you prioritise nightlife, beaches or quiet.
What is there to do besides the beach?
Plenty. Climb or ride the cable car up Monte Capanne for archipelago-wide views, tour Napoleon's residences and the Medici forts in Portoferraio, walk the old iron-mining trails around Rio, taste Elban wine in the eastern vineyards, and follow coastal footpaths between coves. Diving and snorkelling are excellent thanks to the clear, protected waters.
