Jamaica is the Caribbean at full volume — the birthplace of reggae, and a mountainous island where the beach is only ever half the story. Most visitors land at Montego Bay on the north coast, within easy reach of Doctor's Cave Beach, the glowing Luminous Lagoon and a run of well-known resorts. West lies Negril, all seven miles of soft sand, cliff-top bars and celebrated sunsets. Ocho Rios, to the east, is the adventure hub, where Dunn's River Falls climbs in terraces and zip-lines and river tubing fill the day. Further east the island grows wilder and greener around Port Antonio, home to the Blue Lagoon, bamboo rafting on the Rio Grande and some of the best surf in the country. Inland, the Blue Mountains rise cool and misty above the capital, planted with the coffee that carries their name and laced with hiking trails toward the peak. Kingston itself is the cultural engine — Bob Marley's city, with galleries, music and the island's deepest sense of place. English is the official language and the Jamaican dollar the currency.

The drier, sunnier months from around December to April are the peak season, popular for beaches and outdoor adventures. Summer and early autumn are warmer and wetter and fall within the wider Caribbean hurricane season, so travelers then should watch forecasts and consider flexible bookings. The Blue Mountains are noticeably cooler than the coast year-round, so pack a layer if you plan to hike or stay at altitude.
