Rates checked in September 2026. Under its single-fee structure, Airbnb charges most hosts 15.5%; Airbnb says other hosts typically pay between 14% and 16%. Exceptions depend on country and account type. Booking.com sets the commission rate in each accommodation agreement, and visibility programmes may increase it. This worked example uses a possible range of 15% to 25%. If Booking.com facilitates payment, the applicable payment terms and transaction cost are contract-specific. Our 6.9% cost contribution is included in the displayed total and contributes towards Stripe payment fees and refunds. Nothing is added at checkout and nothing is deducted from the owner. Fee models can change, so please check each platform’s current terms. Sources: Airbnb Help Center and Booking.com General Delivery Terms.

Popular places to stay in Malaysia

Malaysia manages to be several holidays at once, and the distances between them are refreshingly short. Peninsular Malaysia pairs the glass-and-neon energy of Kuala Lumpur with the food-obsessed heritage lanes of Penang and the beach resorts of Langkawi, while a separate slice of the country sits across the South China Sea on the island of Borneo, home to rainforest, rivers and orangutans in the state of Sabah. In between lie some of Southeast Asia's most relaxed islands, from the snorkelling coves of the Perhentians to laid-back Tioman. Two coasts means two rhythms: the west coast is generally at its best from around December to February, while the east-coast islands shine roughly from March to October and largely shut down during the northeast monsoon. English is widely spoken, transport is straightforward, and the mix of Malay, Chinese and Indian cultures shows up on every plate. For travellers who like to combine a city, a jungle and a beach without long-haul hops, few countries make it this easy.

Vacation rentals in Malaysia: FAQ

Book vacation apartments and holiday homes safely with BookNoFees ↗
When is the best time to visit Malaysia?

It depends which coast you want. The west coast, including Kuala Lumpur, Penang and Langkawi, is typically at its driest and best from around December to February. The east-coast islands such as the Perhentians and Tioman are best roughly from March to October and are affected by the northeast monsoon later in the year. Borneo generally suits the drier months of March to October. Because the climate is tropical, short rain showers can happen in any season.

How do I get around between the mainland and the islands?

Malaysia is well connected by domestic flights, which is the usual way to reach Sabah and Borneo, plus a good network of buses and trains on the peninsula. Langkawi and Penang are reachable by ferry as well as by air, while the smaller east-coast islands like the Perhentians and Tioman are served by boats from the mainland. Planning island trips around the monsoon calendar is worth doing, as boat services can pause in the wettest months.

Is Malaysia a good destination for families and first-time visitors to Asia?

Yes. English is widely spoken, the infrastructure is modern, and you can combine a city, rainforest and beach in a single trip without difficult logistics. Kuala Lumpur works well as an arrival base, Langkawi and Penang are easy beach-and-culture stops, and Borneo adds wildlife. The variety of Malay, Chinese and Indian food also makes eating out simple and rewarding for most tastes.

What are the highlights beyond the beaches?

Kuala Lumpur offers the Petronas Twin Towers, busy markets and the Batu Caves on its edge. Penang's George Town is known for its heritage shophouses, street art and hawker food. Sabah in Borneo is the place for rainforest and wildlife, including river cruises and orangutan sanctuaries, plus the diving around its offshore reefs. The cooler Cameron Highlands add tea plantations and hiking, and historic Melaka rounds out the cultural side.

What does it mean that BookNoFees charges 0% commission?

BookNoFees deducts no commission from the amount set by the host. The displayed total includes a 6.9% guest fee on the host price, covering payment processing, refund handling and payment risks. Nothing is added at checkout.

How do I book and pay when I reserve direct on BookNoFees?

You can message the host before booking. For a booking request, Stripe first places a card hold for the full amount; the host has 48 hours to accept, and only then is the amount captured. Instant Book is charged immediately after Stripe confirms payment. Do not transfer the booking amount directly to the host. The displayed total already includes the 6.9% guest fee on the host price, covering payment processing, refund handling and payment risks.
