Rates checked in September 2026. Under its single-fee structure, Airbnb charges most hosts 15.5%; Airbnb says other hosts typically pay between 14% and 16%. Exceptions depend on country and account type. Booking.com sets the commission rate in each accommodation agreement, and visibility programmes may increase it. This worked example uses a possible range of 15% to 25%. If Booking.com facilitates payment, the applicable payment terms and transaction cost are contract-specific. Our 3.9% cost contribution is included in the displayed total and contributes towards Stripe payment fees and refunds. BookNoFees earns nothing from it. Nothing is added at checkout and nothing is deducted from the owner. Fee models can change, so please check each platform’s current terms. About Outer Banks
Staying in Outer Banks
The Outer Banks, often shortened to OBX, is a slender chain of barrier islands strung along the North Carolina coast, separating the Atlantic Ocean from a series of broad sounds. It is one of the East Coast's great beach-house destinations, where families return year after year to rent homes within walking distance of the surf. The islands are linked largely by a single coastal highway, and each town along it has its own feel. Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk form the busy central stretch, close to shops, restaurants and the site where the Wright brothers made their first powered flight. To the north, Duck and Corolla are quieter and more upscale, and beyond the paved road the beaches of Corolla are home to herds of wild horses descended from colonial-era stock. To the south, Hatteras Island runs long and narrow through the Cape Hatteras National Seashore, a haven for fishing, surfing, kiteboarding and the iconic black-and-white spiral of the Cape Hatteras Lighthouse. The landscape is ever-shifting sand, so beaches, dunes and inlets change over time. With its mix of lively towns and remote, protected shore, the Outer Banks suits both easy family weeks and quieter getaways.
Good to know
Vacation rentals in Outer Banks — FAQ
Which Outer Banks town should I choose?
For shops, restaurants and central access, the Nags Head, Kill Devil Hills and Kitty Hawk stretch is convenient. Duck and Corolla to the north are quieter and more residential, with Corolla known for its wild horses beyond the paved road. Hatteras Island to the south is more remote, favouring fishing, surfing and wide open beaches. Choose by the balance of amenities and quiet you want.
How do I get to and around the Outer Banks?
Most visitors arrive by car, as the islands are linked mainly by a coastal highway and there is no major airport on the islands themselves. A car is effectively essential for reaching beaches, towns and sights spread along the chain. Ocracoke Island is reached by ferry, so check current ferry schedules if you plan to visit, and allow time for seasonal traffic.
Can I really see wild horses?
Yes. Herds of wild horses roam parts of the Outer Banks, most famously on the beaches north of Corolla beyond the end of the paved road, and on some southern islands. They are wild animals, so keep a respectful distance and never feed or approach them. Guided tours operate in the Corolla area for those without a suitable four-wheel-drive vehicle.
What are the main sights and activities?
Highlights include the historic lighthouses such as Cape Hatteras and Currituck Beach, the Wright Brothers National Memorial at Kill Devil Hills, and the beaches and dunes of the Cape Hatteras National Seashore. The islands are known for fishing, surfing, kiteboarding and kayaking in the sounds. Some lighthouses and historic sites have seasonal hours, so check before visiting.
How does booking direct on BookNoFees work here?
You can message the host before booking. For a booking request, Stripe first places a card hold for the full amount; the host has 48 hours to accept, and only then is the amount captured. Instant Book is charged immediately after Stripe confirms payment. Do not transfer the booking amount directly to the host. The displayed total already includes the 3.9% cost contribution for Stripe payment fees and refunds.
Why book direct instead of through a large platform?
BookNoFees deducts no commission from the amount set by the host. The displayed total includes a 3.9% cost contribution for Stripe payment fees and refunds, and BookNoFees earns nothing from it. Nothing is added at checkout.
