Puerto Rico fits an improbable amount of variety into a roughly 100-mile-long island. It starts in Old San Juan, a walled Spanish colonial quarter of blue cobblestones and pastel houses, guarded by the sea-facing forts of El Morro and San Cristóbal. Just east along the coast, Condado and Isla Verde trade history for beach-resort energy. Inland, El Yunque is the only tropical rainforest in the US National Forest System, laced with waterfalls, pools, and lookout towers. Drive west and the pace drops to the surf-town rhythm of Rincón, known for winter waves, sunsets, and seasonal whale-watching. Offshore lie two of the island's treasures: Vieques, home to Mosquito Bay and its glowing bioluminescent water, and Culebra, whose Flamenco Beach is regularly ranked among the world's finest. The south adds the stately architecture of Ponce and the salt flats and cliffs of Cabo Rojo. As a US territory, Puerto Rico uses the US dollar and needs no passport for travellers arriving from the mainland US, which keeps the practicalities simple.

How do I reach Vieques and Culebra?
