In the north, Hanoi mixes a dense, atmospheric Old Quarter of street food and motorbikes with tree-lined lakes and French-era architecture, and it is the usual springboard for Ha Long Bay, the UNESCO-listed seascape of limestone karsts best explored on an overnight boat. The centre holds Hoi An, a beautifully preserved former trading port lit by lanterns and famous for its tailors, sitting close to the beaches and airport of fast-growing Da Nang. When is the best time to visit Vietnam?
Because Vietnam is so long, the climate varies by region and there is no single perfect month for the whole country. Broadly, spring and autumn are comfortable across much of Vietnam, the north is cooler in winter, and the central coast and south have their own wet and dry patterns. If your trip covers north to south, it is worth checking the seasonal outlook for each stop rather than assuming one forecast fits all.
How do people usually travel the length of Vietnam?
Many visitors work their way between Hanoi in the north and Ho Chi Minh City in the south, using a mix of domestic flights for the long jumps and trains or buses for shorter, scenic legs. Basing yourself in a rental for a few nights in each region, rather than moving every day, makes the distances far more relaxing and leaves time for day trips.
What is the best way to see Ha Long Bay?
Ha Long Bay, a UNESCO World Heritage site of towering limestone islands, is most often visited on a boat trip from the Hanoi area, with many travellers choosing an overnight cruise to see the karsts at quieter times of day. Day trips are also possible. A rental in Hanoi makes a convenient base before and after your time on the water.
Is Hoi An or Da Nang a better base in central Vietnam?
They sit close together and complement each other. Hoi An is the atmospheric choice, a lantern-lit heritage old town known for its tailors and food, while Da Nang is a larger modern beach city with the region's main airport.
