Few small islands carry a reputation like Capri. Rising in sheer limestone cliffs from the Bay of Naples, it has drawn emperors, artists and the international jet set for centuries, and it still trades on a particular kind of Mediterranean glamour — designer boutiques, cliffside terraces and boats bobbing in impossibly blue water. The island's social heart is the Piazzetta, the little square in Capri town where the day's ritual of coffee and people-watching plays out beneath a clock tower. From here, narrow lanes lead to the Gardens of Augustus and the switchbacks of Via Krupp, with the famous Faraglioni sea stacks framing the view offshore. A boat trip to the Blue Grotto, where light filters through an underwater opening to turn the cave an electric blue, remains the island's signature excursion. Higher up and quieter, Anacapri offers a chairlift to the summit of Monte Solaro and the serene Villa San Michele, once home to the Swedish doctor Axel Munthe. Most visitors arrive by ferry from Naples or Sorrento, stepping ashore at Marina Grande before the funicular carries them up to town.

How do I get to Capri?
Capri is reached by ferry or faster hydrofoil, mainly from Naples and from Sorrento; seasonal services also run from Positano, Amalfi and other bay towns. There is no airport, so most travellers fly into Naples and continue by boat, then use the funicular, buses or the Anacapri chairlift on the island.
Is Capri worth staying overnight, or is a day trip enough?
Day trips are common, but staying over lets you enjoy the island once the crowds and cruise excursions have left — the Piazzetta in the evening, quiet mornings and softer light for the views. For a calmer, more atmospheric experience, an overnight (or longer) stay is well worth it.
When is the best time to visit Capri?
Late spring and early autumn offer warm weather, swimmable sea and fewer crowds than the July–August peak. High summer is at its liveliest but busiest and priciest. Many businesses scale back in winter, so the shoulder seasons tend to give the best balance.
