Ischia is the largest of the islands scattered across the Bay of Naples, and the greenest — a volcano cloaked in pine, chestnut and vineyard, ringed by beaches and famous the world over for its hot mineral springs. Unlike its glamorous neighbour Capri, Ischia feels lived-in and unhurried: a real island with working towns, family-run trattorias and a spa culture that stretches back to antiquity. Thermal water bubbles up all over, feeding open-air spa parks like the Poseidon Gardens and Negombo where you can drift between pools of different temperatures with the sea just beyond. The island's emblem is the Aragonese Castle, a fortress heaped on its own rocky islet and joined to the town of Ischia Ponte by a stone causeway. At the southern tip, the car-free fishing village of Sant'Angelo tumbles down to a harbour and the long dark sands of Maronti beach. Rising in the middle is Monte Epomeo, the island's summit, reached on foot for views across the whole bay.

How do I get to Ischia?
Ferries and faster hydrofoils sail from Naples (from the Molo Beverello and Calata Porta di Massa ports) and from Pozzuoli; some seasonal links also run from Sorrento and other bay towns. There is no airport on the island, so the usual route is to fly into Naples and continue by boat.
