Kefalonia is the biggest of the Ionian islands, a rumpled sweep of pine-covered mountains and turquoise bays off western Greece. Its scale is part of the appeal: you can spend a week here and still be discovering new coastline. The headline is Myrtos Beach, a curve of pale pebble between two headlands that seems almost too blue to be real, but the island keeps rewarding the curious. Mount Ainos rises to over 1,600 metres, a national park cloaked in rare Greek fir, while underground the Melissani cave-lake glows when midday sun drops through its collapsed roof. Argostoli, the capital, wraps around a sheltered lagoon and holds the island's everyday life; north lie the postcard villages, tiny Assos clinging to its isthmus below a Venetian fortress and Fiskardo, one of the few settlements to survive the 1953 earthquake with its old harbour houses intact. Add loggerhead turtles in the southern bays, family tavernas pouring local Robola wine, and a hire car that turns every headland into a new view.

How do I get to Kefalonia?
Kefalonia has its own international airport just south of Argostoli, busiest in the summer season, with seasonal flights from across Europe and connections via Athens. You can also arrive by ferry from the Greek mainland and neighbouring Ionian islands. A hire car or scooter is genuinely useful here, as the island is large and the best beaches and villages are spread out.
When is the best time to visit?
Late spring and early autumn are the sweet spot: warm sea, open tavernas and thinner crowds than the July and August peak. High summer is hot and lively, ideal for beach days but busier at Myrtos and Melissani. Many smaller places wind down in winter, so check directly with your host about seasonal opening before booking.
Do I need a car on Kefalonia?
For most visitors, yes. The island is one of the largest in Greece and its highlights, from Myrtos to Fiskardo to the caves near Sami, are scattered across mountainous terrain. Buses connect the main towns but run infrequently. If you plan to stay put in one resort you can manage without, but a car unlocks far more of the island.
What should I not miss?
The classics are Myrtos Beach from its clifftop viewpoint, a rowing-boat trip on the Melissani cave-lake near Sami, and the villages of Assos and Fiskardo in the north.
