Rates checked in September 2026. Under its single-fee structure, Airbnb charges most hosts 15.5%; Airbnb says other hosts typically pay between 14% and 16%. Exceptions depend on country and account type. Booking.com sets the commission rate in each accommodation agreement, and visibility programmes may increase it. This worked example uses a possible range of 15% to 25%. If Booking.com facilitates payment, the applicable payment terms and transaction cost are contract-specific. Our 6.9% cost contribution is included in the displayed total and contributes towards Stripe payment fees and refunds. Nothing is added at checkout and nothing is deducted from the owner. Fee models can change, so please check each platform’s current terms. Sources: Airbnb Help Center and Booking.com General Delivery Terms.

About Lake Como
Lake Como fans out below the Alps in a distinctive inverted-Y, its three slender branches carved by ancient glaciers and hemmed by steep, wooded mountains that drop straight into deep water. Barely an hour north of Milan, it has been a retreat for the wealthy since Roman times, and that long history shows in the ribbon of ornate villas and terraced gardens strung along the shore. Bellagio sits at the very hinge of the lake, the town where the branches meet, its stepped alleys and lakeside promenade making it the classic image of Como. Across the water, Varenna offers a quieter, romantic waterfront, while Menaggio and Tremezzo anchor the western shore near Villa Carlotta and the film-famous Villa del Balbianello. The city of Como itself, at the southern tip, brings a silk-making heritage, a lakefront funicular and easy train links. This is a lake made for slow days: hopping between towns on the passenger ferries, touring garden estates, lingering over lakeside dinners with the mountains glowing at dusk. Refined rather than raucous, Como rewards visitors who come to look, stroll and savour rather than chase nightlife. Trains from Milan and nearby airports make arriving straightforward.
Good to know
Lake Como lies about 45 km north of Milan and is easy to reach by train, with Como San Giovanni station on the Milan-Chiasso line. The A9 motorway links Milan towards Switzerland, and Milan's Malpensa, Linate and Orio al Serio airports are all within reach. Once at the lake, the passenger and car ferries are the best way to move between the shoreline towns.
The public boat service connects the main towns and is the classic way to travel Como, linking Como, Bellagio, Varenna, Menaggio and Tremezzo with regular passenger ferries and some car ferries in the central lake. Trains run down the eastern shore to Varenna and Lecco. Roads are narrow and winding, so many visitors leave the car parked and rely on boats.
Bellagio, at the point where the lake's branches meet, is the essential stop for its stepped lanes and gardens. Varenna offers a quieter romantic waterfront, Menaggio a lively western-shore base, and Como city anchors the south with its cathedral and funicular. Cernobbio, Tremezzo and Lenno are known for their grand villas. A central base makes day-hopping between them easy.
Villa Carlotta at Tremezzo is famous for its azaleas and rhododendrons; Villa del Balbianello, on a wooded peninsula near Lenno, is celebrated for terraced gardens and film appearances; Villa Melzi's landscape park sits beside Bellagio; and Villa d'Este and Villa Monastero add to the collection. Many open their gardens to visitors seasonally, so it is worth checking opening times before you go.
Spring and early autumn are ideal: the gardens are at their best, the weather is comfortable for walking and boating, and the towns are less crowded than in high summer. Many villa gardens and ferry timetables run on a seasonal schedule that thins out in winter, so late spring through early autumn generally offers the fullest experience of the lake.
